Lame dog, fine dog, wwyd?

I have a 11 month old border collie, last night about 11pm I noticed she was absolutely hopping lame, 3 legged, non weight bearing and wouldn't put it down, no heat, she let me feel her all over, no wincing or pulling back, I've kept her in one corner of the room all night (not crated) and this morning she's happy as larry running and bouncing all over

sooooo last night at 11 I was nearly panicking and thinking emergency vet jobby, this morning I'm scratching my head, should I take her to the vets for a check over, only to be told she's fine, she is insured.

or do I keep her at home and rest her, I can crate her but she will lie quiet in the same room as me, and see how she is later or tomorrow

vets is only open 10 - 12 today and then its emergency hours and costs :eek:

any advice plz?
 
Personally, if she's fine this morning then I wouldn't take her to the vets but maybe just do some gentler walks today. My dog has done something similar a couple of times and I can only assume she's pulled or tweaked something when madly haring about on her walk like she does. She has also been hopping on an evening (normally after she's been lying down) and then by morning she's been fine.

a couple of times she's had a slight limp the next day so I have kept her on lead but she's normally fine by the afternoon. She's never limped for more than a day or so.

I think, if it continues or becomes a regular thing and it's the same leg then yes, take her to a vet for a check up
 
As above, I wouldn't go to the vets today just keep her fairly quiet and monitor her. Pups do tend to injure themselves and recover quite quickly. A few weeks ago Freya misjudged coming through a gateway at speed and crashed into the wooden post, screamed the place down and stood there holding her leg up. A quick rub from me and she was able to put it down and within about 30 mins was walking almost sound. I kept her quiet for the rest of the day and the next morning you wouldn't have known she had done anything.:)
 
Thanks for the replies, it sure helps to keep me grounded, I'm such a worry wort :rolleyes:

I've just let her into the garden for a wee and she yelped as she ran so I deffinately think she's tweaked something, I'll take her out on a lead next time, I've grounded her for today and tomorrow and will see how she goes, vets on Monday if need be *fingers crossed* and thanks again
 
My young one got one back leg stuck under the book case (Don't. Ask) at about five months old, hopping lame, not weight bearing, screaming, I rushed him to out of hours vet at 11pm, on the 20 min drive, crying my eyes out, considering whether to put him to sleep rather than go through with all that expensive invasive surgery, how his career and all our hopes and dreams were shattered before they had even begun....little bugger bounced out of car, jumped all over vet, tried to jump up on the table and showed off his impressive side gait up and down the hall with his tail wagging.

She did try to tell me that his cruciates were very loose and that he was moving funny (er he was five months old, he's a German Shepherd, they are meant to move long and low...) so I probably did disturb a romantic night in, whoops :o

I'd rest her until Monday.
 
I had this with my collie but it went on for a month so I did get him x-rayed in the end. Vets and I think that he had just pulled a muscle when he was hooning around and we haven't had a problem since, even though he's still mental!
 
My spaniel is always in the wars....currently under the duvet after pulling his back out hooning. Might be worth investing in a supply of painkillers from the vets .... I use them regularly!
 
oh! now I don't know wether to go to the vets for some Metacam lol altho kicking myself as I've just given 3 months worth of Rimadyl to a charity that my old dog had, they would have come in handy now

my old girl also ruptured her cruciate ligament, successfully operated on but because I left it thinking 'oh give it time' when she started limping, arthritis (sp) had already kicked in, another reason for my worrying now :-(

Pup is well enough in herself tho, she tried to chase the cat

having had years of taking our previous collies to the vets for unexplained lamesness and spending a fortune and never getting a definate answer Im afraid when my present collies show unexplained lameness i tend to ignore it, so far it has always resolved itself !

Spam's been limping on and off all day today, we think we know the cause now tho

last night she followed my daughter to the bathroom, so in her wisdom and playing about my daughter put an empty toilet roll tube on her leg, we think Spam might of overdone it kicking her leg to get the toilet roll tube off and has some sort of whiplash ish kind of injury :-(
