My parents' dog is a 12 year old Weimeraner. She has been on Metacam for a while but is quite lame on her front leg. This is obvious when she first gets up but it seems to wear off as she moves around. She is a mad dog and I wonder if they tried to keep her quiet (ha ha) if it would improve. In the meantime does anyone recommend any supplements? She is on the maximum dose of Metacam already (for her hips). Thank you.

You could ask your vet if he could suggest a change in pain relief. If she were mine , at 12 years old, I would just let her get on with life and have fun rather than restrict her, particularly as the lameness seems to wear off after exercise.

at this age I'd be trying herbal and homeopathic remedies...
Devils claw, green lipped mussel, turmeric, glucosamine and chondroitin( look for the brands that offer these in conjunction) ...the list is endless...and worth a try in conjunction with the conventional medicines.

My dog has just been switched from Metacalm to a new NSAID which is a tablet given monthly (sorry can't remember the name). It seems to work as well as the Metacalm but has less side effects. My dog (12 year old GSD) probably needs a little more help now, however, so I will be interested to read other suggestions.

Given he is already on meta am I would have it X-rayed. Given he's a daffy he could have pulled a shoulder but age wise it may be something else.

Lucyad, don't know if it is the same but my old lurcher has trocoxil (spelling may be wrong without getting up to read packet). She has one a month and it works really well. She also has yumove daily and oily fish twice a week.
