My horse is currently very lame on his left fore. 3 weeks ago he did a one day event which went well, the following week he was fine but by the Friday he felt a little off. By the Monday he was very lame in walk. I had my vet out who looked at him and thought he had an abscess (he is barefoot and responded to hoof testers on one area of the toe) he dug a hole in the area, got no pus and did not want to dig deeper as was approaching the sensice part of the foot.
Since then I have been poulticing and tubbing twice a day to no avail. I thought he was improving but last night he was almost non weight bearing again. The vet has manipulated his foot and is positive it is not fractured, we are taking X-rays tonight to rule this out for certain and check for laminitis also.
Does any one have any experience with an abcsess taking this long?
Thanks

X-rays habe been done, no evidence of laminitis or gas pocketing suggesting an abcsess so vet is now thinking hairline fracture. Nightmare.

Thanks. Apparently the prognosis is good providing it's not affecting the joint, which he doesn't think it is. I'm still hoping for a bruise or pus but that's seeming less likely now 😕
