I know this is probably an endless question but what could cause a horse to be hopping lame when turning but almost sound when in a straight line?

A couple of days ago, he was lame all the time, treated as abscess but nothing changed after poulticing, no difference if he was kept in or turned out, pulse is raised in the foot and his foot is hot, today after being in for a couple of hours the affected leg was swollen (but then so were his hinds as standing in doesn't agree with him), every thing else is still the same

Have been speaking to the vet all weekend and he'll be out tomorrow if there's no change, just not sure what to do for the best

abscesses sometimes take a few days/weeks before they are to the surface and ready to burst. From what your describing I would bet an abscess is what you've got.

Can you get a farrier out tomorrow or get hold of some hoof testers to thoroughly test the whole hoof?

Farrier came out Tuesday and found nothing, came out again on Friday as we thought it might have built up a bit more by then but still no response with the hoof testers yet he's still hobbling around :-( Hence my (and the farriers!) confusion. I'm hoping its an abscess and nothing more sinister, we just need to find the damn thing and release it!

Could it be laminitis? Two of my horses subsequently diagnosed with Cushings at 12yrs started with laminitis in one foot this time of year. If the laminitis is mild they can look ok on the straight but show lame on the turn.

Never occurred to me but could be possible. He's 17hh ISH not the best doer, on very little grass, mostly mud, and ad lib haylage so not an obvious candidate but will get him checked out just in case. I'm consulting with the vet again in the morning so will see what he thinks

My sisters girl has just completed 7 weeks rest with same symptoms-still slightly lame. Been nerve blocked and xrayed but found nothing. Assuming soft tissue so same time rest again and if not sound will get MRI. U can either box rest or get vet and find root cause otherwise u will just send urself mad!good luck getting to the btm of it
