Hi all, just concerned about my new ex racer who i obtained 2 weeks ago this saturday. When i got him i was aware that he had a suspensory ligament in his front leg which was the reason he couldn't race anymore but they said it should be fine for normal riding etc just not being hammered on a racecourse, he had been sat in a field for 2 months resting his leg and was healed and fine when i tried him at their yard. So we brought him home on the saturday and on the sunday we had a new full set of shoes on however, on the monday he was lame in one of his back legs , left it for a week thinking its new shoes if he hasn't had them on for a while and he was still lame, we got a vets opinion who said it was in his hoof and to try and poultice it for 3 days thinking it might be an abcess but before we did that we thought we'd bring the farrier back out as they are the hoof experts ;) Farrier took his back shoes off and said the lamness was probably caused by his bad feet which he had cut short and as a result left little room for the nails in the shoe, hence the nails might have caused him being lame. So back shoes off and farrier said give him up to four days, gave him 3 days and he was still lame, not seriously lame just looking a tiny bit sore i havent checked him since then but i am going to check him tomorrow which will be day 6 and i don't know if he will be any better. Does anyone have any idea what it is? Farrier said if it was an abcess he would have burst it by now.. i am going to get him back out if he is still lame :( he was intended as a project to bring and sell on and i cannot afford to have him sat in a field and don't want to take a big risk in vet bills if this is going to be the result. If else fails, i will probably ring his old owner, tell them the situation and ask if they want him back or sell him for very little.. However, i dont want to do this as he has such a lovely nature and is so so easy in everyway i just cant afford to keep him if he isn't doing anything. Any suggestions?

i will see if i can take some, thankyou but they look perfectly normal.. do't know if im worrying and he's simply bruised his sole but its just sensitive due to his bad feet!

So the horse was sound before he was shod? If it was a nail bind or nail prick it would have been better to get the shoe off sooner... but that's easy to say in hindsight.

Abscesses can sometimes take far longer than a week to pop.

Trimming the hooves too short is enough to cause lameness/footyness. A Farrier really shouldn't do that, whatever state the hooves were in, the horse should be as sound as it was before the hooves were trimmed.
