My boy is v flat footed but we have sorted out front feet. He is now lame on back foot. Vet has come and ruled out any leg problems through blocking so we know it is connected with foot. It all started about 3weeks ago when he was very lame and was putting his toe down first very nervously. With a few days box rest, etc, it started to get better but then he went bolting around his field and went lame again. Farrier is coming on Tuesday to take shoe off and to check for bruising, abcess or corn but if it is not any of this what could we be looking at? Is navicular a possibility? He is a 16.3 hh TB, 6 years old with no history of laminitis.

I would wait and see what your farrier says. If I am honest, my farrier is the first person I call if I have any lameness with no obvious signs. My farrier is good and will usually get out on the same day. If he doesnt find anything - then I call the vet. Navicular usually affects the front feet.

Sounds like an abscess - why didn't your vet check for this? I'd get my farrier out sooner rather than later. Hope you get it sorted

sounds similar to my pony who had a pedal bone fracture... thought it was an abcess (SP!) for about 2 weeks and local vet wasn't really getting anywhere. took him up to willesley andhad it diagnosed within 15 mins, quite amazing really. He came back to full competition and was winning open novices (british eventing). Good Luck whatever you find out it is and hope he doesn't have anything too serious! x

Echo the other replies, farrier rather than vet, especially as you describe a typical stance for a foot infection.

Ditto here too. Farrier for feet, vet for anything else.

It's one of the most important things I have learned from this forum.

Hope your horse gets on okay. x

Having the same with my boy at mo - albeit a front foot.
He had a bruise. No lameness but heat. Had new shoes. Farrier checked over & said bruise coming out. A day later the muppet pulled said shoe off & he was v lame! Had shoe back on within 24hrs & he's still v lame! Am keeping fingers crossed hasn't developed into an absess but if no improvement by tomorrow will be getting poor farrier back again!
