Lame in the foot - ideas?

Hi @Zoeypxo

I have a DDFT horse who sounds similar to yours.

She is completing her final month of box rest, having been in from late October. She has a small hardstanding pen around her stable. She is hand walked and grazed in hand a couple of times a day and has coped brilliantly. She is barefoot and in hoof boots as much as possible.

She will build up turnout for a month or so and then come home to go out 24/7 for the rest of the year, in a quiet environment.

We will reassess before winter.

She is six so I’m keen to give her every chance to come sound. Our aim is to get her hacking sound and able to school on the flat a bit. My vet thinks I am being very realistic.

I think it sounds like our horses are at similar stages now. Mine is nearly sound trotting up on the straight but still showing lameness on a circle.

I am also building up heel and working on getting the foot angles a bit better - mine had the worst feet when she came to me (she arrived lame).

It will be so interesting to hear how your horse progresses.

ah that sounds like we are in the same boat!

my vet cant give me a specific time frame as we have no mri of the foot. She says it could take 6 months it could take 12.

6 months will be end of April so i plan to have a good look at her then.

tbh i am just happy she is no longer hobbling around the field, it was awful. She now marches from A-B and has a hoon around with her buddies without issue.

i will keep an eye out for your posts and will update mine in a few months, fingers crossed they both continue on the improvements:)

Thought id do a little update
Small changes in angles
Big changes in soundness!
Walking in straight lines begins next month boots and pads to start with and go from there.
Very happy 🤞

ETA - obviously aware that we still have a long way to go, cant wait to see these feet at 12 months !

unfortunately had a set back with a nasty sole bruise but we are back on track now and trotting up sound. Walk hacking has started and she is feeling great. Her hooves have toughened up massively and are very hard now.
The farrier even commented on how hard her soles are becoming.

I wish i had gone down the barefoot route before trying remedial shoeing and injections but we live and we learn.

Still remains to be seen if she will stand up to ‘proper’ work but i am more than happy with a happy hacker, she is 15 now and tbh owes me nothing

Brilliant job, have you used hoof boots during the transition?
Thank you!
Yes i have used cavallo treks with equine podiatry supplies pads on the fronts. I started with flex behind but found them a bit rubbish in terms of twisting and falling off. So now have cavallo treks behind also.

shes turned out 20hrs a day bootless .
Really rate the cavallos i know they are too clumpy for some horses but work great for us!
