Just wondering whether anyone else has any experience of this really.

Went to pick horses feet out on Friday evening and she was reluctant to pick up her near fore, trotted her up and she was lame. Found a small cut on the underside of her fetlock joint so washed with Hibby scrub/purple spray etc. Better the next morning but not sound so I put her out anyway only to have her come in as lame as she was on Friday night. Cleaned it all up again, same happened on Sunday.

She seemed to be better after being in so I left her in yesterday but she was just as lame last night.

There is no heat in it at all, a little swelling in the tissue around and below her fetlock joint (but above her heel) and a little up her leg. The tendon doesn't feel tight or hard and I would expect her to be lame in walk as well if it was a tendon issue. She strides out in walk no problem but is lame in trot. She lets me squeeze the leg etc (with only a little protest) and there is still no heat.

She is in again today and waiting for my vets to call back, just don't want to get the vet out for them to say, yes she is lame and try box rest because I'm doing that anyway.

Any ideas/experiences welcome....

Thanks

If you had a cut in your heel it might sting in walk but I bet you would be lame if you ran with the skin opening and closing.

Donkey has an overreach injury at the moment (how she found the energy to overreach is beyond me) but she too is lame in trot - I have kept it clean and sprayed her with liquid plaster and let her go out. Waiting for the wound to seal, we are nearly there!

That was my initial thought but the cut seems to be closed now, I know it's still healing on the inside but I would have expected the lameness to be gradually improving.

She isn't a lamey horse by any means, she's a fit event horse and 1/4 CB by the way!

I'm probably worrying over nothing, we horse owners always seem to over react.

I've squeezed it with pinchers etc to put pressure on the sole (was thinking absess etc) with no reaction at all. The only reaction I get is when I squeeze the swelling but I would expect that because it's swollen, it's the lack of heat that seems bizarre and possibly means more to do with muscle/tendon than infection?

I've had my head stuck in Black's Veterinary manual for days!

had one like this recently , she just seemed unhappy and somtimes not as sound as I would like. farrier found a punctured sole that was draining on its own from time to time. only charged me the price of a normal trim. Phone the farrier for feet never a vet!

Very common. Can even be lame in trot but not in canter. Its to do with weigh distribution I think. Hence why you trot them up to see if they are sound. Sorry dont have any advice for you, but good luck
