Bit of a weird one, my horse went hopping lame last Tuesday AM, heat in the for and slight filling of the bottom of the tendon. So I rang farrier who said hot poultice ring back in AM which I did. Wednesday sound, rang farrier said turn out see how it goes. Sound Wed, Thurs and Fri day out all day in at night.

Saturday AM hopping lame again, slight puffy tendon. Rang farrier again same thing hot poultice, SUN am about 3/10th lame, heat in foot and slight filling of tendon. another hot poultice. Mon AM 3/10th lame , heat in foot on the right hand side and slight filling of tendon, another hot poultice farrier arranged to come out today.

This morning farrier rang he had been kicked by a horse so I said not to worry to much so went about doing him today and he was sound no heat in foot or filling of the lower bit of the tendon. Rang him back he said dry poultice and leave him in, check again this PM still sound.

None of the poultices have produced pus or any exit for an abscess. Has anyone have a horse do this on off lame with heat in the foot then none? When he has been initially lame (last Tuesday and Saturday) he was so lame he was virtually falling over (not that my horse is dramatic or anything!!) Sunday/Monday lame in walk but nothing major. I don't know what to do with this horse, very frustrating as he was a full fit competition horse. He is doing his nut being in 24/7.

certainly sounds like an abscess that's not quite ready to burst yet I have experienced this a few times in the past with my horse. Can you get your hands on some hoof testers to see if there is a sore spot anywhere?

frustrating isn't it, I had many (expensive) episodes of calling the vet and when he came the next day he was sound so there was nothing to see. Unfortunately this led to lots of expensive guess work and investigations as it was such an unexplained mystery as he was hopping one day and fine the next.

I was a new owner at the time and knew nothing about hooves

Maybe you will have to wait until he goes lame again and then see if you can get a vet/farrier that day to come and use the hoof testers. In the meantime I would turn out to see if the movement helps bring the abscess to a head.

Yes weather permitting tomorrow that is the plan, very frustrating for both of use. Blooming horses who would have them!!
