ok so my horse got a kick on monday to the back of her cannon bone, she was lame on monday, on tuesday was sound when trotted up straight, she did have a lump on her cannon but no heat and the lump was hard and not painful to touch, she has had 4 days of rest. trotting on the lunge today and seems almost fine, could hardly see anything wrong but she steps under herself slightly more with the sound leg and less with the leg that got kicked. the lump has gone down so u can only just feel it ever so slightly. the vet said on the phone to start riding again but he doesnt know what i have noticed today. my mare is a tb and has so much energy because of her days off as soon as i take her out now she just wants to canter i am scared shes going to do herself more damage. should i give her some more time off, if i do when i finally go to ride her she will be so fresh even though she is being turnout everyday when she is turned out she just eats and stands there

Since she was never actually seen by a vet last time I suggest you leave her in, cold hose a few times a day and GET THE VET OUT on Monday or before if she is getting worse. Sorry to shout but you didn't listen last time.

The fact thats when turned out she won't eat etc. If this isn't normal behavior I would call a vet. It has been a fair few days now and there is no point risking your horses legs.

my horse is sound she was sound the day after everybody on my yard is telling me not to get the vet out. what is wrong with you, i speak to my vet on the phone he doesnt not need to come out

You say she is sound but in your opening post you said she is lame on the lunge.
Either she is sound or she is lame.
If you don't want advice don't ask for it - I feel very calm thank you - I have just had a lovely bath and am sitting here with my little JRT and my OH and a large glass of wine

shes sort of stiff as i described to you putting even weight on her hind legs but just not reaching totally forward with the kicked one, you cant be that calm if you were 'shouting'

JessPickle - she said her mare is eating so I'm assuming she's ok in that sense, I think she just means that she's not burning energy off in the field but rather saving it for when she's in the school which is what is worrying the OP. I actually know the OP from an old yard and she has been on the phone to me about the mare in question. She did actually call the vet after the first injury (which is the most recent in a long line of call outs due to having a series out unfortunate events, none of which had anything to do with her and were simply bad luck, so I see her hesistation in getting the vet out again for the sixth time in a month!) the vet advised her over the phone to cold hose and rest which she did. The mare was sound again the next day, but was given a few more days off as a precaution and the vet is up to date on her current state of health.

Regarding the current post - my horse has also had various leg injuries in the past thanks to unfriendly field companions. He does tend to not stride under himself as well after an injury, as I assumed he is still somewhat sore, much like us as humans after an injury. I would continue to exercise in walk and slight trot if sound and vet agrees, and would not lunge for a good while. Good luck Gemma!

No, we can't see your horse, and unless your vet is psychic, neither can he.
IF YOUR HORSE IS NOT RIGHT THEN GET THE VET OUT AND STOP MESSING AROUND

Well if she is sound that's fine - if she isn't then you must do as you see fit. Ask a question on here and you will always get an answer even if you don't like it.

We can't give you any advice about lameness when we've not seen the horse and we don't even have a vet's diagnosis to go off.

If you need advice on how to proceed with management of this injury, get the vet to look at it and advise accordingly.

Get the vet out to have a look. If the vet won't come out, then get a different vet. If you were sick or not quite right, you'd go and see a doctor - same principle here. If there's nothing wrong, then fine. Don't ask a bunch of people on your yard or on the forum - we aren't vets and we haven't seen the horse so we're not qualified to give you a professional opinion. Better safe than sorry.

My pony was kicked in the field about 18 mths ago. I did get the vet out as he was sore and he had been kicked on muscle and bone and it had broke the skin in several places. If I remember correctly the vet put him on bute and a week off work.

He now has Bone Spavin on same leg

which is probably just a co-incidence but can't help wondering if it 'started' it off.
