Hi - Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing the following? When i have ridden my 6 yr old mare over the last month she has been intermittently lame. It is only slight, and only happens for the first five minutes. she trots slightly short infront once we have cantered she has freed up and goes extremely well. the first time it happened i stopped and she had a fortnights rest, since then it has happened a number of times and i have ridden through it and she has then worked beautifully. tonight i rode her in the field and the lameness was more pronounced (the ground is quite hard), i therefore stopped riding. the blacksmith is due tomorrow, i am therefore going to let him have a good look at her, i am then going to get the vet to flexion test etc, but i just wondered if anyone else had experienced anything similar? any help or info is very much appreciated

Before you ride has she been standing in her stable for a while or do you ride straight from the field?
My mare is currently in during the day to lose weight and I thought tonight she was slightly lame when she came out her box but by the time she had walked across the yard she was ok.
I'll be interested to read the replies you get.

she had been out in the field all day yesterday and rested for 1.5 hours before i rode her, so she wasn't stiff due to being stood in. also she seems worse on hard ground to soft going. :(:(

How did you get on with your farrier today? Did he have any suggestions as to what could be causing the lameness?

i would be one happy bunny if its an abcess, i have nightmares of navicular and allsorts going round in my head!!!
