Hi all, after a bit of advice while awaiting for the vet to come out to my boy.

He tripped up yesterday while out hacking, didn’t fall over but just seemed to stumble over his feet. I walked him in hand back to the yard and I then trotted him up. He suddenly fell short (in trot only) landing heavily on his front left leg. Cold hosed the leg and checked for signs of heat and swelling, there was none. Checked him this morning and still no swelling or heat, seems fine in himself, drinking eating etc as normal, trotted him up this morning and although not as lame as yesterday afternoon (i.e now only landing heavily every other stride) have kept him in and have contacted the vets for some advice. They have recommended I keep him in to rest and poultice the suspected foot until they can come out tomorrow afternoon.

Another point to add is that he had his back done at the beg of December and after treatment, I trotted him up and he was coming up lame in trot and landing heavily on his left leg again. After a few days rest he was fine but may just be a coincidence but he is exhibiting the same symptoms as he was back in December. Note I didn’t get the vet out that time as he came sound after those few days and I didn’t think there was anything to worry about and put the soreness down to him having his back treated.

As there is no heat or swelling in his legs I’m mindful to suspect he’s maybe got some hoof or shoulder problem. His feet were done on 21st Dec and farrier said there appeared to be no problems then that he could see.

He’s happy standing and not stiff or uncomfortable to walk, its only noticeable when asking for trot, and he seems to be less lame on softer ground.

Has anyone seen the same problem themselves in their own horses or could provide some advice (hopefully reassuring!) as to what could be the problem?

I’ve had him over a year and he’s been fit and healthy since I’ve had him with no known previous medical problems or lameness, he’s a 13 year old TB in pretty good general fitness and health. He's a general all rounder that I use to hack, jump and school on, no hard work at the moment and is worked just at weekends while nights are dark. Never experienced this problem with him before!

Having a horse with various leg problems myself, If a horse isn't crippled lame I personally would rather them be out moving around and keeping mobile but that is personal preference.
As you say it has happened before I would think the vet is a good way to go!

I have no advice as it really could be anything, but just want to wish you good luck!

Until the vet has seen him, there is no point in assuming anything. You will only worry yourself, and it MIGHT be he has just tweaked himself.
We had one that tore her check ligament, showed the same signs yours did (in fact she was not even lame in trot), and another that had "pulled" something and refused to weight bare on it for two days (drama queen )

If he is worse on hard ground than soft, then I would suspect a hoof problem. But what, is anyone's guess. Best wait until the vet comes out before trying to suss it out. Vet will be able to isolate where the pain is comeing from by manipulation and flexion tests. Hopefully it will be something really minor.

Thankyou all for your replies :)

Baker190 - yes I agree with you with regards to the turnout and did in fact turn him out this morning as hes not the type to go tearing round and possibly risk further injury but after speaking wtih the vet, he said he'd rather he was brought in and rested, just in case....

Wagtail - yes my thinking too that it's a possible hoof problem due to being seemingly comfier on soft ground.

I know I'm just worrying myself thinking things that it might be and trying to second guess but you can't help yourself I suppose! Worried mums! Nothing like a nice vet's bill to kick off the New Year

Thankyou for all the best wishes, I'll hopefully have an update tomorrow afternoon.

Hi all,

I just thought I’d post a little update on my boy.

Vet came out and diagnosed a slight tendon issue on his front right leg (hence why he was falling heavily on his left leg to compensate and shift the pain to) although not blinding obvious to feel but when she flexed his right leg she could feel some slight swelling just below his knee where one of his tendons lie. No heat and no serious swelling, so am hoping the recovery should be fairly straight forward and the fact that although he’s still lame in anything more than a trot he isn’t however as lame as he was a few days ago and resting it is obviously aiding recovery.

She has also suggested that he go in for a lameness work up and scan in two weeks’ time if I wanted a full diagnosis as to what he’s done and how long his recovery might be. Other than that he’s to be on 6 weeks complete box rest (poor boy) – if anyone knows of any occupying toys/ideas for a box rested horse that’d also be helpful!
