My pony has gone lame in trot (she is 20years old) she has been taken out of work to rest ad is now slowly being brought back into work with a few gentle walks. I trotted her a few strides to day and is lame but looks more stiff in her front leg rather than lame. There is no heat or swelling. What could it be and is there anything I can do to help her?

The vet needs to do a lameness investigation to find out what it is, has the vet given you any bute to try that for a week or two incase its something fairly minor? Or even a test with the hoof testers to start with and if the vet is still not sure they need to nerve block to find out where the lameness is and take it from there, could be a bit of arthritis but best to find out for sure.

I don't wish to worry you but, my pony is lame in trot only and seems his normal chirpy self. He has NO SIGN of any heat or swelling and I had the vet the day after he went lame. He had 1 week rest on Danilon and 1 week rest without anything. The Danilon definitely helped. He had his feet tested by the vet and farrier with no reaction. I was advised to leave him a little longer in case it was a simple sprain (our ground is incredibly hard).

He didn't come right so the vet came back last week and did nerve blocks, he blocked out to the fetlock and the vet took xrays (we were thinking maybe the start of arthritis) we were incredibly shocked to discover he actually has a chip fracture :( I am awaiting confirmation from the insurance company that they will pay and then he is going to have to have surgery :( the vet says there is no option. I've had horses all my life and sadly have a lot of experience with lameness but this is a new one on me. I can honestly say I have NEVER had a simple lameness :( other people I know have horses with a simple sprain and before long they are back up and running. I'm very depressed about the whole situation and I urge you to speak to the vet, I'm so glad I called my vet back out rather than taking the advice of other liveries who said to just rest him and he would come right....the vet says the longer the chip is there the more damage it's doing :(
