so... horse lost front shoe last week and was hobbling.... got it back on late the next day and gave him off until weekend.
I went to ride him yesterday and he was fab in the school, not lame at all.... went for a plod up the road to cool down and he was lame on the hard ground....

any suggestions?

Could be an abcess, corns, ligament strain, anything really that doesn't hurt too much when the ground absorbs some of the pressure. I would give the vet a call

^^ as above and also bruised sole. I've had similar problems - definitely get the vet to have a look.

it may be the wrong thing...... but as I suspect it may be a bruised sole I am going to give him bute until tomorrow night and then see how he is.

After he had his last set of shoes on he went lame, farrier came back and put them on a bit less tight... he was still lame and so vet suggested bute for three days and this worked.

He was then fine until he lost this shoe last week. if he is still not fine after the bute, i do have the farrier out on Friday to do his next set of shoes...so I will call the vet weds/thurs to come out first and check everything else.

Does this sound ok?

My horse it sometimes lame on hard ground after shoeing she has thin soles and flat feet and is a TB. My farrier says she is just prone to being sore. I just rest her for a few days and then she is fine .Luckily its not every time always worst in the summer

If your horse suffers with thin soles, try Keratex hoof hardener painted on the soles of the feet. Toughens the sole, helps my mare as she feels stones easily and moreso in Summer.
