I am after some advice please! Toffee is 19 and bar an abscess, she's never been lame so my knowledge is limited in this area.

The vet was out today for an ongoing issue with her eye (long story involving a cat..!!) and I asked him to check her hind legs as I haven't been happy with how she has been lately. She has always been a bit snatchy with her near hind but last week actually kicked out and got my knee. She also wobbles when you hold her near hind up, as though the off hind can't take the extra weight. Another thing I have noticed is when the farrier has her foreleg outstretched, she lifts the diagonal opposite hind.

Now, back to the vet, he trotted her up and said she was 2/10 lame in her off hind. After flexion tests she was 3-4/10 lame. What I want to know is, how bad or not is this? She has been put on a high dose of Danilon for her eye so he is going to check her leg when back on Friday so see if this helps and will look into further. He think it's age and may need long term Danilon or 'Bute but I was after some advice and experiences of this type of lameness please

Atty was 1/10 lame before flexion and 2/10 lame afterwards which was enough to find PSD in his hind legs.
So 2/10 and then 3-4/10 would be lame in my book, however with her age your vets suggestions sound about right. You could go scanning and xraying but that's entiley up to you.
Was she already on bute before today? Because if she's that lame whilst on the bute then I'd be a bit concerend.
But best thing is to get her eye sorted then re-evaluate she might have just been having an off day.
Hope she gets better soon.
ETA Am I right in thinking she's on box rest at the moment? She might just be stiffer than usual because of that and she'd be fine again once out.

Thanks for your reply

She was on painkillers (some I hadn't heard of before and can't remember now, sorry!) until Friday and the vet was here on Monday so she had the weekend off them so nothing was being masked hopefully. I don't think I would go for x-rays etc as the treatment would probably be the same with or without them!
She's in during the day to keep out of the light where as usually out 24/7 so a small difference, but anything could be a factor.

Thanks for the info, it's interesting to get some comparison as my knowledge in this area is slim (she was 10/10 lame with her abscess!!

), I'm more up on colic, lymphangitis and eye trauma!
