Hi all,

My lab is going into the vets tomorrow for initial consultation for lameness. She has occasionally suffered a limp so we put her on joint sup and it's worked well but with the hard ground we are noticing more and more limping after exercise, and in the last week it has been clear lameness. Especially when getting up from rest (like a cramp). Sometimes fore and sometimes bi-lateral. My gut says hip dysplaysia but I really hope not.

I have requested a full lameness work up for her, now cost is no issue as she is fully insured but what would you be asking the vet to do and why?

Any advice would be great fully recieved, although she is insured I want to use my allowance wisely.

Thanks,

Hip and elbow x-rays. And possibly back also. For hips and elbows, the dog must be positioned correctly, as below (dog scored under a different system but HD and ED free). A vet experienced in looking at plates should be able to tell straight away if there is anything amiss. You may then send them to the BVA for scoring if you want. Best scores are 0:0 (0) for each hip with a total in the low hundreds being the worst, and 0-3 for elbows, 0 being best.

Do you know anything about her parentage, were her parents hip/elbow scored?
What age is she?

she is 5, I could PM you her given name but I would have to dig out her paperwork (it's in the back of a cupboard somewhere!)

Thanks, she has had elbows done in the past when she had an injury but I believe they were clear.

If you didn't already get x rays, please go to a specialist. I asked my vet for hip X-rays of my HD dog and they were rubbish, frankly. Wish I'd seen a specialist.

She is booked in for hip and elbow X-rays, they think arthritic changes and maybe an old cruciate (sp) ligament.

I trust this vet, very methodical so will see what the X-rays show.
