So the vet came out this afternoon to start the investigations into Charlie's lameness issues.
He agreed that he is 100% sound on the straight, no issues there. We decided to lunge him in the field...perfect in there too.
Took him down to the car park and once again lame on a small trot circle, very much so on the off fore and a little on the near fore.
Nerve block done on off fore...now sound on the lunge but this made the lameness on the nearside worse...so nerve block nearside too and lunged sound.
So vet is sure the pain is in the hooves and definately in both. Hoof testers show he has excellent hard feet so no problems there.
X-Rays will be the next step plus possibly lunging on a school surface.
It has to be said that apart from the few bites I received from the grumpy sod he was very well behaved and tolerant of the whole thing.
So now we find a way to transport him to the vets for a workout and x-rays and go from there.

Just to add that the vet suggested horse does a bit more work instead of just chilling in the field as he is clearly bored. He cribs for a past time and is a grumpy git that bites at every chance he gets unless his brain and body are occupied. He can be a lovely lad though when he wants to be and is an angel to ride.

Ok not good news but you have identified the area easily and now you 'just ' have to find the why .
Hope you get answers and that you can do something about it .

He said he can fetch the x-ray machine to us BUT he is keen to see him lunged on the school surface to see how he does there. However transport is an issue so he may well end up doing the x-rays in the field shelter :o
He said it would be advantageous to see how he goes on their surface so we can ascertain what level of work he will be capable of. However he did say that if he wasn't insured then he wouldn't be suggesting x-rays etc due to costs etc. We dont know if there will be a "cure" as such, I guess it depends on what the x-rays show up..??

(My daughter still not great to be honest, its been an incredibly stressful day but I feel relieved that she is a little brighter...her condition means that tomorrow is never guaranteed :( )

Lordy you are going through mill aren`t you ... **big fat squishy hugs, and choccy and wine**

Ok, so it`s good that you know where the problem lies, x-rays/remedial work may get him sound enough to get him into a new home knowing all the facts ..... I see what the vet says about working him on their school surface too, hopefully he`ll show hardly any lameness there, and with correct shoeing will go on to have a well ridden future

Will most likely get back on the phone today and book the x-rays...unfortunately these are probably going to have to be done at home as transport is a problem and with all of the back and forth to the hospital etc Im a bit on the broke side for a few weeks :(
Will see what the vet says though.
On the plus side, the lady whi was going to buy him has said she will hack him out a bit for me so hopefully between us we can get him doing a bit more :)

That is good news, and you never know, if the lameness turns out to be "sortable" she may well still buy him from you ;)
