Went to the woods for normal hack and noticed mare was lame on way home.Jumped off check her hoof for stones and walked her inhand until we came to major A road. After getting back to cross she seemed sound (thought she might have stood on stone and have bruising) so tried her in trot on level road and she was fine.Next morning trotted her up in hand and sound again but gave her day off. Today I lunged to check again and she was completely sound on left rein and became unsound after few mins on right rein. She has heat in fetlock but cant find swelling around tendons. She has been cold hosed and stabled.
Question ?
If she had bruising from hoof would heat come out around fetlock ?(this is what yo thinks)
Both feet seemed same temperature and she isnt tender in hoof area. Any other thoughts appreciated as to injury.
Ill monitor and call vet out after few days but open to any ideas.

I would say no, if there is bruising in the foot then there shouldnt be heat in the fetlock. Although sometimes if an abcess is brewing there can be swelling up the leg and lameness can be intermittent, which confuses things!

Have you felt the digital pulse?

No pulse and fetlock is cool this morning.Three of us had good feel no swelling but tiny little bit of mud fever as in mm scratch which has been treated.Possibly she has turned /twisted her fetlock or mud fever has caused previous heat.Ill keep out of school and take her for gentle walk out on even surface.I dont want to try her in school incase I aggrivate something .
Thanks for reply will monitor daily .

Oh no, poor thing.
I have to say though if it was a bruise I'd expect the hoof to be warm but not the fetlock. It is quite possible the heat is mud fever related I'd imagine. Keeping my fingers crossed it's just that she's done something silly in the awful weather we've had.

Walked her out tonight on roads no trotting although she wanted to.Fetlock is cool which is good. Will cancel my lessons and just walk out for week and see how it goes then pop her on lunge to check again. Our vets call out on Mondays so will lunge next sunday fingers crossed shes ok if not vet check.
How are you feeling made any decisions yet.Been thinking about you and Jesper.

So glad it sounds like she is improving, will keep fingers crossed.
Jesper must have heard me talking because he appears to be a lot sounder this week. Beth - our physio - came out to see him on Monday and said his back was fine and that she'd never seen him look better. Apparently for a retired horse his muscle tone is excellent. He does have a very tight hamstring but she doesn't think he's in great pain. We trotted him up for her and she was surprised he was noticeably lame but agreed he looked happ - especially when he tried to jump on my head!
We've cancelled the vet who was coming Tuesday as it seems like no drastic decisions are needed which is a relief. I don't know how long he'll be with us for but as long as he's happy he'll have a home.
