Hello im a newbie, having been lurking for a while now thought take a deep breath and go for it. Anyhow i have a wbx 7 yrs dapple grey mare who whilst out hacking tripped and went lame, so gave her a couple of weeks rest and she came sound, then put her back in field and two days later came in very lame. Got vet out who nerve blocked and suggested the problem being she has 'tweaked' her ligaments in her hoof so suggested 4wks box rest with bute. Well now into last week of box rest and couldnt resist but i trotted her up last night guess what still lame in trot but sound in walk and when turning. What would you do, ask to have xrays done and find out once and for all if anything sinister is going on, or speak to vet and maybe give her longer on box rest. Sorry if im rambling but we had so much planned for this summer and has just got our flat work up together. Trying to be patient.

It sounds like it needs further investigation now - xrays, scan etc. Is your horse insured? If so go for the works until you find the cause

If she's been on box rest for nearly 4 weeks then you trotted her up, surely she might just be stuff???

Leave it until the end of the box rest, walk her out a bit then ask her to trot up....you will get a better picture that way.

Don't try to do too much too soon. I know you feel disappointed, but its much better to miss two months and take it steady than rush your mare back when she's not ready.

Call the vet out and get them to check her over again.

My pony is lame and i think the problem is in the ligaments around the coffin joint, although he is sound on a straight line but about 25% unsound on a left circle. We had xrays with our previous vet and he suggested that we put him on navilox. I think time was the main healer as we didnt notice a single difference while he was on it. We then changed vets and had nerve blocks into the coffin joint and around the back of his foot, and he came sound with the coffin joint block. We had xrays done, but there was nothing interesting on there, ruling out navicular. Our vet has suggested synequin and medicating his joint and i have heard good feedback about medicating joints.
We also thought the problem may be behind, as in bilateral lameness so had his back done a few times. This was way out and his neck muscles were tighter above his lame leg and his pelvis had rotated considerably.
I would suggest xrays and nerve blocks and even try getting his back done. It might help.
Good Luck!
