Hi, my horse has just been diagnosed with fluid in/round coffin joints of both front feet (I seem to be writing this a lot at the moment!) It's basically early arthritis. Sound on straight, lame on circles. Is yours worse on hard than soft? She was only diagnosed through an MRI scan, its the kind of thing that before they had MRI would probably just have been labelled 'navicular' and that would have been that.
I don't understand how your vet can think that it's in the coffin joint/bone though, if your horse was still lame when blocked from fetlock down? If it was in the foot then he would have gone sound when the foot was anaethatised??? (sp!). So logically you would think it must be something in the fetlock or higher? I'd go back to vet and ask some Qs and also see if they recommend x rays or MRI scan. I'd go for the MRI if you can get it on your insurance (is pricey - nearly £1k), as it will show everything, whereas you could have the xrays and still not know for sure. Good luck, I know how horrid it is not knowing what the problem is.

My horse was diagnosed after along period of lameness with Pedal osteitis which is slight bone changes around the coffin joint, the prognosis is very mixed to be honest, she has now been sound for over 6wks and ofter initial box rest period was turned out in field, she has now been fitted with leather pads and wide webbed shoes and am introducing her back into work very gradual. The future is very uncertain with my horse, its basically get back onboard bring her back into work and hope she doesnt break down again, looks like am going to be governed by how hard/soft the ground is but my farrier is very positive and thinks she should be able to do most things again in reason obviously never be a top show jumping horse but then again she wasnt in the first place so i just have to be realistic. Bit of a emotional rollercoaster ride, these horses.

thanks for the replies... TILLYD when he was nerve blocked he showed lameness still on the off fore (which was the one he was deff lame on) but also showed slight lamness on the near side, this was only on a tight circle on concreat, he appears to scuff hes toes at times, i have now twice asked my vet to just get on and x-ray but hes not appearing keen or willing.. max is so quite, so its not behavoure that is preventing this! vet will be out next tuesday which will be the week and a half rest period, hes currently having 1 bute a day and being let out to streatch for 5 mins in a field... he dosnt even break into a trot and being that hes a big horse in quite a small stable thing this is needed.
just in case.. he has no trauma rings on feet ect. dam beast not currently insured as have only had him a few weeks!!
