Hello all
I have a Shetland cross who is just getting over a really bad spell of laminitis. She is a driving pony and we have been bringing her into work slowly however she appears to be lacking energy when driven. She has lost a tonne of weight and is actually thinner than before the laminitis. We plan to compete her at indoor driving trials over the winter but getting her fit is a real pain when she seems knackered all the time!
We plan to do a bute test over the next few days just to checks she's not still in pain, but tbh she doesn't seem footy, just sleepy.
Does anyone have any tips for getting calories but not sugar into a pony's diet?
Thanks in advance

Linseed would be the normal route provided there's nothing else wrong, I would get bloods taken in case theres more going on like a virus or liver damage and get heart checked, just cos if it was that extra exercise could be risky. Assuming that's ok linseed has higher calories but without lots of sugar, apart from the lower sugar it's fairly similar profile to good grass so would be ideal for keeping condition. Adding oomph without calories being high is trickier, possibly worth considering tiger oats?

Hi, my daughter seems to have posted on my behalf! Yes, the pony's been under the care of the vet since mid June, no EMS or Cushings, has shoes, frog supports and putty put on under X-ray so hoping pain is not still an issue. She's out at night in bare paddock, 12hr soaked hay and one small feed of high fibre cubes and HiFi Lite.

Thank you. She was on micronised linseed last winter so happy to try that agai. What are tiger oats?
