Had the vet out this morning as my mare had signs of laminitis. She has had been off work for a susponsory injury, shes been out for a few hours and had three months off. She was scanned last week and could start 10mins walk work builing up. She put on lots of weight as normally keep really fit over the summer as only way to keep weight down. While been off she has rationed food. Has anyone had another injury and cant work a fatty? She only looks at food and put weight on. Any advice or experience would be appricated

Get bloods done......my 16yr old, 17 mow, got lami last year. It was when we were just coming out of that bad snow patch. He is kept for but since we couldnt work him as school was frozen and tracks were under three foot of snow his weight piled on ( he was on two slices of hay with 5 hours turn out) and he got it bad.
Vet checked his bloods and he is insulin resistant.

my lami is on fast fibre morning and night with a very small handfull of happy hoof in and 20 tablets of metformin split between two feeds.

He is on max 7 hours turnout with my other lami(he had it before he came to us) and 7 lbs of dry hay that's been soaked for 12 hours over night.
He is a 15.2 appy and I keep his weight at 420klios on my weight tape.
He is also worked every day and sometimes twice aday.

At the moment he is back in his box due to abcess that has taken a week to burst! Idiot pony:rolleyes:

Shes a 13.3welsh, We have her on a pinch of hi-fi lite am and pm for bute.
Shes on 5lb of hay dry but soaked 12hours aswell. We double net it tried triple netted but refused to eat any of it. Not on turn out yet.

My boy wouldn't eat it triple netted.....he got really angry.

Is that 5lbs in 24 hours?

When mine was on box rest, for nearly 11 months (the last three months he was ridden twice aday and the last month in hand grazing to get him fit and slowly get him used to the grass) he was on 14 lbs soaked spilt into four nets over 24hours.

When we introduced grazing it was in ten minute bursts the each week upped by 5minutes until we hit the 45 minute mark then we chucked out on bare paddock whil we mucked out.

No typing error. Shes on 5lbs twice daily then there split in half. The rest acounts for her feed and any amounts of straw she eats.

I rescued a section a pony she is 13yrs old from a person that couldnt look after her she was just dumped in a field they new she was prone to laminitis but just left her there. they said she was going to be sent for slaughter if no one had her. she had over grow hooves and her neck was thick and hard and she was over weight she didnt look like she was in pain and i never had a pony with this problem before. i just kept her in the stable and sand school and gave her hay. she is now looking good and happy. but i just wanted to ask can you still ride the pony normally like hacking out im a small adult my pony is 12hh what weight would be ok for the pony to take? the kids ride her on leadrein some times but she is a little to much for a kid to handle i wanted to start riding her in the next few month ive lost a lot of weight and would like to excersie her but dont want to hurt her. could i leave my pony out for a week if i electric fenced of a small bit of field with a shelter with hardly any grass in because im going on holiday for a week and i want to make it easyer for my dad to look after her? if anyone has got any tips or anything that can help me that would be good thanks
