Just got 20 bales of last years hay (august), just a bit worried cause it's more fibrous and don't want her to get impaction colic. I'm soaking it for 12hours but can i add salt to her small hi-fi lite feed to make sure she drinks. If so is it table salt and how much?? She's a 15.2hh, 600kg cob xxxx

I add salt to my horse's feed (he's laminitic, too, and on soaked hay and Safe and Sound) - and I also add magnesium. I put in about a teaspoon or so of salt in a feed. I wouldn't worry too much about the hay, though I understand that a couple of hours' soaking and then rinsing is adequate. I soak his night time net for a couple of hours, and his morning net overnight.
Hope your horsey gets better soon.

You worry too much hun.

As long as you got fresh water there she will drink, soak the hay but dont worry about her. She is gonna be fine.

Has the farrier been and popped the Imprint shoes on yet?

I know i'm a dreadful worrier!!! So scared that something else will go wrong though. Imprint shoes are on, she's doing really well. Brilliant new farrier, spent ages trimming her and getting everything just right, so relieved. He's back in 4 weeks to do them again

good to hear. ive seen horses go from dog lame to quiet happy on there feet once glue on's are applied. Dont worry too much about your hay.. if shes eating it then its fine.

You got any pics of her feet? I'd like to see!

I'm very impressed with them. I have got pics on my phone but can't send them, sorry.
I've kept her on the same amount of bute but might try reducing it tonight as she's fine with turning etc and no pulse. She's getting mega cross at being in which is more like herself!!!

My vet suggested either a bran mash or Epsom Salts to act as a laxative if I was worried about impaction. A teaspoon for a 500Kg horse is about right, from what I've read.

How much did the imprint shoes cost?

I wouldn't add salt, she will be getting plenty of water from soaked hay and from her water bucket. Give her 24/7 access to a salt lick and she'll take what she needs.

im glad she is more comfortable. Glue on shoes are amazing for laminitis, they really do reduce the trauma caused by nailng on. Glad things are begining to look up.

Good luck!
Keep us posted please!
