Hi, Im doing a big graded presentation as part of a qualification at school and I would really appreciate it if anyone had any case studies they wouldnt mind putting forward regarding succesful remedial farriery treatments for laminitis.

Also, if you have any views on treatments such as heart bar shoes, frog supports, the imprint sport horse shoes and dorsal wall lifting, I would love to know, even if they didn't work in your case as this would help me loads. If you could please outline the degree of laminitis the shoeing was used on that would be great too :)

And obviously if you used any other farriery treatment then i'd love to hear about that too!

Thanks a lot!

Hi, My pony had laminitis nearly 8 or 9 years ago now and he had grooves cut into his hooves which I believe relieves the pressure or something? I can't quite remember but they worked really well and his laminitis went away quite soon after that, he was also on the usual drugs and box rest etc. My horse has just recently been diagnosed with cushings and has developed laminitis from this. She had frog pads to reduce the initial pain untill heart bars and pads were fitted. I found that the pads did not do much to reduce her pain, she still walked very badly on them (she also refuses to take pain meds which doesn't help!) they were fiddley to keep on so they would often fall out. She now has heart bars fitted over a pad and has farrier silicone underneath the pads. This seems to have improved the pain and she is walking better (but she is also starting to take meds now) but I don't feel that they have helped with the rotation of P3 as this has still slightly increased. Hope that helps!

You should look into the barefoot side of this too - search Pete Ramey and Jaime Jackson on the web, and if you can get hold of Jaime Jackson's book 'Founder, its prevention and cure' that would help you too.

My mare was diagnosed with laminitis last March, she had a slight rotation in her left fore but as she was recovering she her right fore started to rotate as she was putting all her weight on her good leg.

When the vet first came out they did x-rays, then put frog supports on until my farrier got her size in the Imprints. She then had 4 sets of Imprint Shoes on every 3-4 weeks, after that my farrier put her in heart bars and then she had her normal shoes back on. The whole period took 5 long months and she was completely stabled apart from walking outside for her x-rays.

If you need any more info, just let me know.
