We had a little shetland X with severe lami and the only reason he survived was his hoof boots. Shoes are the worst thing you can have on laminitic feet but due to severe rotation and foundering he needed hoof protection so he ended up living in Cavallo hoof boots for weeks, with a frog pad inside them. He was comfortable within days and eventually grew a brand new, perfect hoof despite having over 10degrees of rotation.

Had a quick look at the 'relief boot' and it looks a waste of money - flimsy and will wear through quickly - it's idential to the poultice boots (with foam at the bottom) and ours lasted 4 days for the old horse when she had an abcess

Instead have a look at proper hoof boots - a pair of 'trainer' type boots will allowed to to wrap his feet in nappies and put a thick pad at the bottom (cheapest and best thing possible is a gardners kneeling pad cut to size!). There's a couple of makes avalible but I used Cavallo Simple boots as they were the easiest to put on and off. They'll cost you #80 new but will save a fortune on a) bandages, vet wrap and duct tape and b) shavings because the pony won't need a knee deep bed if it's got boots on. They will also last for ages and you can later ride in them during recovery or sell them for a decent price on ebay.

Agree with above! Although the Easyboots that are designed for riding are meant to be used for just short periods, my mare lived in her Old Macs for about four weeks 24/7 while recovering from an operation that left a large hole in her foot. She wore them with gaiters and pads and they didn't rub at all.

Hi, not been on here for a few weeks! just to let you all know what happened..i couldnt afford to spend £80 on hoof eze boot so in the end I did buy a laminitis relief boot and it did the trick! It was so funny, little Bella ( my daughters pony) was a different pony. It was just like putting her slippers on! admitedly they wouldnt last for ever but Ive had them on her in the stable for a while now and they're still perfectly ok. We've also used them to turn her out for an hour at a time and theyve been fab! I would recommend them. Thanks for all your advice and hopefully now winters coming we wont have the problem of laminitis..
