It is with a very heavy heart that I write that my beloved horse, St Flannan's Seoirse aka George, was put to sleep yesterday afternoon after a horrible 3 month battle with laminitis. It looked like we were nearly there 2 weeks ago, and he had his heartbars refitted, he went downhill rapidly immediately after and x-rays yesterday showed catastrophic rotation in both front feet. He'd never have recovered. The vets are at a loss as to why he went downhill so fast, there was no reason. We did everything we could. George was a fighter to the last, and minutes before the vet came to put him down he was flinging his hay around his box and kicking the door. The vet said he was the toughest horse he'd ever met. He was only 12 years old. We had the best 8 years together.
I am so sorry to post a laminitis story with such a sad ending. There is little to be learned from this particular case. Other than treasure every minute with your horses, they are only on loan to us.
xxxx

One of the cruellest things to happen to a horse or pony. Often it is poor management leads to an attack but sometimes, in spite of faultless horsemanship, the disease strikes. These are the hardest cases to fight because the triggers might be invisible or completely unexpected and beyond suspicion in 99% of horses.

Deliberate overfeeding and ignorance are unforgiveable, but you should try and take comfort from the failure of your efforts being out of your hands, probably, from the outset. Some battles you simply can't win.

Sleep well and free from pain now, George.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Sleep well George xxx

I know another pony that went in a very similar way... seemed to be making progress then xrays confirmed the worst. no explaination for it as nothing had changed in his management routine... I guess sometimes the body just gives up.

Sounds like you did the best by him. so very very sorry. xx

I am so very sorry to hear that, never an easy thing but always the last act of kindness we can ever give our animals is allowing them to be pain free.

Big big hugs....

RIP George - run free lil man... eat as much grass as you want now!

This is such sad news, the worst part is that you thought he was getting over it, we lost Sasha this week to a different illness, but we also thought she was well on the way to recovery, as you did, it somehow makes it feel even more unfair. So sorry for your troubles and RIP George.

Greatest of hugs to you, im sorry for your loss.

Laminitis took my baby after a 3 year battle, he got it in his back hooves 2 months ago and was P2S 6 weeks ago.

You can read my thread in veterinary, Euthanasia to be there or not.

Hes in a much happier place and no longer in agonising pain xx

So sorry for your loss. I dread the day that I lose my pony of a lifetime, she suffers from lami and so I really feel for you x x
