Im getting a new loan horse next week, and hes great apart from the fact that hes had lami about a year ago for 2 weeks. His ownder doesnt do anythign differently now other than muzzle him when theres fresh new grass and i just wanted to check that theres nothing i should/ shouldnt be doing. I have another horse who is on turnout so i want him out with her as much as possible. Will he be ok out through the winter? I do have a stable i just dont liek using it all that often. (i will if i have too)

Please dont tell me hes not the right horse for me, its really hard to find loan horses that are tall enough and at a good age without something really wrong and as far as problems go this one is manageable! Hes such a good horse that i cant say no becasue of this. His owner says she doubts hell get it again, it was the grass at her old livery yard where most of the horses got lami, she moved him and hes been fine eversince. Hes 13yr old tbx.

Thanks

Hi,

In march this year I bought my daughter a pony who I knew had lami, and she's also got seedy toe in all 4 feet.
Some might think mad, but she's a wonderful genuine childs pony who has taught my daughter everything.
Lami is easily managed with a knowledgeable handler and there is no reason to think they will get it again if looked after right.

I do stable mine, she goes into a small bare paddock in the spring and summer but is fine in a normal sized one during the colder months.
I monitor her weight carefully, and keep her at a condition score of 5. I am also very careful on what I feed her, she's gets a scoop of healthy hooves, with a magnesium supplement.
She could live out I dare say with a muzzle, and I may try this next spring.
I think as I've found a method that works for her and keeps her sound, I am reluctant to take chances and try new things.
We have had a bout of Lami with her whilst we discovered what was right for her, it was horrible to see her barely able to walk and hobbing in pain. But it only took 2 weeks to be sound again after box rest and bute from vet, and she then had further time off to recover before being gently brought back into work and has been sound on the lami front since then.

Lami scares some people, I'd take the likes of lami over a bucking bronco pony anyday, because Lami is totally manageable with the right person taking care of the horse.
So you're right not to be put off :D x

My boy is out by day ( muzzled) in by night.
Feed topspec lite in a handfull off topchop lite and mag supplement.
All his hay is soaked for 12 hrs so has as much as he likes.

Please do watch the frozen grass, very high in sugars and can start lammi off.
