I went to look at a horse for my husband yesterday. He was lovely so I hope hubby feels the same way when he goes to see him. Owner was very honest and said she had had him out on loan a couple of years ago and he had been very overfed and subsequently suffered a bout of lammi. She said there had been no further attacks.
I am fortunate in that I have never had a horse suffer with this. My question is if they have had it once are they then more likely to have it again?

Yes, once a horse has had lami once, it does mean they are more likely to another attack.

The owner has said that in the past when he was on loan, he was overfed. Therefore, his weight/calorie intake was not managed properly. But, with correct feed and weight management, it is possible that the horse will never have an attack again. We had a section B that came down with it after a very lush spring grass season - we cut right down on his feed and calories, upped his exercise and in the 5 years after that, he never went down with lami again. The family that bought him from us had him for a further 5 years (I think) and he never had a lami attack again.

OK thanks for the info. My wb puts weight on very easily and I have to be really careful with him during the Spring and Summer. This horse sounds very similar. The loaner was showing him apparently and that conversation has been had so many times I'm not even going there.
I did really like him and we will have him vetted if we decide to have him. I think he would be worth the risk.
