If a horse has a 2nd attack does this mean it will be worse than the previous attack or does it not follow that way? Basically does it have a cumulative effect? The horse is under vet treatment by the way.
The short answer is NO. Many ponies (and horses) suffer many attacks, but often the second or third attack can be less severe than the first. However, if there is a severe attack and rotation of the pedal bone, this can become worse.
Hi! Sorry about lami, but I have been there and know your worry. Mine had it very badly in 2004, pedal rotation in fronts, it was dreadful. Anyway he pulled through and got it again this May, and not as bad as before. He was in for a month. I have tried everything, very strict care, feeding etc so God knows why it reappeared, but he is fine again, out lots of time but in a Best Friend muzzle. Just do lots of research and try your best. It is like walking a tightrope, hope you are as lucky as me, some of them just dont make it despite their owners doing their utmost. Good luck. here is the wee laddie!!
Thank you - glad to hear yours is ok, fingers crossed we can get through this and I hope your boy contines to stay healthy for many years to come. It is good to hear that severe cases can make a good recovery. I am slightly fortunate in that we know what caused it this time as it was brought on by steroids (long story but we had no other choice) and the original attack was brought on by illness/stress.
There is no reason why subsequent bouts should be worse, unless they are close enough together to mean that the feet had not had a chance to recover from the last bout.
My horse has had laminitis on more than one occasion (turned out to be due to Cushings in his case) but only had rotation on the first occasion.
Thank you, we had the xrays yesterday and all is well thankfully, no rotation and there is a good depth between the pedal bone and sole. He now has his pads on and is confined to quarters! I'm feeling much happier about the whole thing now.
