Hiya,

My pony is currently suffering a bout of mild Laminitis, i was just wondering if any of you could advise me of what is best to feed him?

He is currently having soaked hay only, is horse hage safe to feed? I think the Blue one says its ok for laminitics? Also should I be feeding him anything else at all e,g chaff etc. I have stabled him and obviously stopped his grass intake completely.

I have a Shetland who is turned out daily in a grazing muzzle. She is in every night and I feed her soaked hay and Spillers Happy Hoof. This is our ongoing routine and we just about keep the laminitis at bay. As far as feeding you laminitic go for a Laminitis approved feed and if she shows signs keep her off the grass as you are doing.
 
Thanks horsycot, I guess I am just after reassurance that I'm doing the right thing! I'm hating seeing him looking uncomfortable and feelinga little guilty for letting him get it as I thought I had taken all the precautions I could... Oh well!

I know when mine got it the vet advised soaked hay only and a handful of chaff with her bute in, nothing else. While they are in the acute phase you want to give them the least amount of sugar possible hence soaking the hay and the chaff should be one for laminitics ie happy hoof, hifi lite but as i said only a handful. No apples, carrots, licks or polos etc etc etc
 
I would go on the advice of your vet really but certainly not be looking at making any changes to his diet at this stage. Stick with the soaked hay and don't worry about anything else until you have got him well and truly out of the laminitis stage.
 
turn out at night when the sugars are lower in sugars bring in in day with your soaked hay like you are doing. give him a hadfull of any chaff aslong as it is lammi aaproved in that put a handful of nettle witch will mop up the free radicals and a handfull of hawthrone leaves witch will help the circulation in the hoof and gat your self a lammi shed lick for stable that will have the four different types of magnesumin in it that will help surport yiur horse aswell!
 
Thanks for the advise everyone, I managed to collar the vet whilst he was at the yard vaccinating today and he said that I was doing the right things.. so its just soaked hay and a very small amount of Hifi lite... I nearly picked a lami shield lick up today..are they any good?
 
not worth the expense, it is magnesium based, would be much cheaper to buy magnesium powder, i use magnitude from equine america, £15 and will last 6 month. It is a calmer, but it is (I think) magnesium oxide. My boy is recovering from laminitis and vet told me to make only one change every two weeks. I used hay soaked for 12 hours, hifi lite and again no carrots, polos or anything else, even glucosamine (mainly based in dextrose)

Hi, just a quick update; Raffy seems to be improving by the hour! Not going to rush him though and just keep doing what I am doing but he is def' looking easier on his feet..

Whats more he seems to be loving being in and all the extra attention!!
 
Hiya, well done on the good work, its really not easy.
My shetland was diagnosed at the end of may with mild lami, shes only just come 100% sound! Shes currently stabled at night with a tiny bit - litterally handful of hay - mixed with straw, she had 1/2 scoop of hifi lite twice a day, mixed with 2/3rd scoop of healthy hooves. Ive recently put her on Formula 4 Feet and ive noticed considerable difference in her!
She grazes with my cob so the field is well grazed, she wears a muzzle on alterate days now, but was everyday. Her weight back in May was 205kg and whilst she was on box rest went down to 175kg, its levelled off at 185kg now and has been that for the last 2 months.... they'rs such a worry arent they, luckily i had a kind and understanding vet who talked me through it all... good luck x
