Put my cob onto a new paddock Sunday and on Monday night from being a beautiful shape she'd bloated herself. Anyhow this morning I got a text asking if she was laminitic, after having a fit (she has never been ill before) I went to see her this evening I noted a couple of pulses (very faint) above her hoof but wondered if that down to some of the road work we'd done on sunday??? basically she trotted and cantered fine but was farting for England. I've now restricted her to her field shelter and put her back in her old paddock. Question is I don't think this is laminitis but could it be early stages or something else -very worried, but we're taking evasive action now

The digital pulse is always there - usually very faint but if you know where to look you will be able to find it. It is often stronger after exercise, especially on hard ground. If it is pulsing or very strong it is a signifier of laminitis.

However if she has bloated herself I'd keep her off the paddock!

Thank you thank you. I felt a slight pulse yesterday well more like a feather touch than anything else. Not being well versed in this lam thing I was told there shouldn't be any pulse. I could see her in walk & she looked fine my gut feeling was she has stuffed herself and probably felt rough. However, I've put her in her shelter overnight and she'll be turned out onto the bare paddock to let the bloat go down as much as anything else I don't want a fat horse in the meantime we have equine lawnmowers in to remove the bulk grass....

So just to recap the pulse should be there? You made my day

You need to check your horses pulse on a normal day so that you know when it is abnormal. A slightly raised pulse could indicate the beginnings of lami but it could also be due to concussion, an abcess or a number of foot problems.
this site is useful if you're unsure of the signs:

The pulse you felt yesterday could well be her normal pulse so I would just keep an eye on her and do what you're doing...

I think you're right though this has fired a shot across my bow the site was useful but I think we'll stick to our new regeime....the pulse was regular very faint and would occur every 3-4 seconds or thereabouts....I hope she's fine and we'll see how she goes over the next day or so what amazes me is how she bloated in such a short space of time...that's cobs for you
