I am in the process of viewing horses & have fallen in love with this particular horse however, I found out today that shwe has had laminitis twice. My question is would you buy a horse that has had laminitis twice

I would be very wary, would want to see all the vet history, xrays etc , would expect it to be priced accordingly and it would have to tick every other box, I would then only consider it IF I had the facilities to manage the land/ turnout to reduce the risk so livery yards that have loads of grass, rules about not feeding hay outside, fertilise the fields etc could be an issue, plus I would take into account what I plan to do with it.

All in all it may not put me off completely if I could cope with the careful management required, which I can as I have my own land/ yard but if I was advising a client I would probably tell them to think extremely hard before deciding to go ahead.

My horse had laminitis twice last year. I would never risk going through it again to the extent of researching any relatives of potential horses to see if any have had laminitis or metabolic issues too. It's put me off buying another full stop.
I would get an independent farrier to view the horse, a chat and xrays from the vet and do a 5star vetting too. Straight away insuring will be tricky.
Do you know what caused it? Was there any EMS or cushings cause? More often than not laminitis is caused by an underlying condition so this needs investigating too.

Never, ever, ever, ever would I even view one that has a history of laminitis. My boy was PTS recently due to laminitis and that was despite the very best care in the world. He wasnt quite 7yrs old :(

I used to think that if you managed it properly then laminitis wasn't that serious. It is. Horses die from it.

its only been 2 years since she had it. she has had frog support done

If it was 2 years ago and she has fully recovered, been in full work for some time that is a positive starting point, most horses will have hoof supports while they are in the acute stage, is she in normal shoes or barefoot? she should not be in remedial shoes now.

No I wouldn't I have had 2 mares with laminitis and lost them both due to the laminitis and I would not put myself through the heartbreak of it again willingly.

No I would never consider it. It can be the most cruel and confusing condition and sometimes there are just no answers to so many questions
It is one of the only conditions I know where the owner beats her/him self up and becomes totally paranoid about feed, supplements, pulses, weight, hay, grass, latest research and just about everything in between

If I were to knowingly buy a horse who had previous bouts of laminitis, if the horse were to get it again or even show early stages I would probably blame myself and beat myself up, logic and reasoning would go out of the window with me.

That's definitely something I'm getting used to not doing!
