Hi some advise needed pls, got my mare in yesterday and she didn't seem herself. Felt her feet and all for were warm around the top and she had pulses. Iv never dealt with lami before, she's never had it.
Yard managers old horse has had lami before so she came and checked her. She reckons she was ok but to put a muzzle on. So last night and today she has had her grazing muzzle on.
Felt her feet tonight no pulses, very slight heat but much cooler. Iv left the muzzle on. Where do I go from here in terms of management. She is overweight but cannot be worked as arthritic and lame. Muzzle is rubbing already even with sheep skin sewed on and vaseline
Help pls thanks in advance x

box rest on deep bed, totally revised diet (no sugar, no starch, very low energy - to put supplements into only), soaked or steamed hay, and I'm sure someone will advise on the supplements. Don't even consider grass for the foreseeable.

The most urgent thing is your VET, closely followed by your farrier - this is an emergency.

Don't box rest, but keep off grass, soaked hay or haylage.

Box rest will seize her up completly if she's arthritic.

It's not much good for lamanitic's either.

See the thing is too she cannot be stabled in summer months as she has severe sweet itch and will itch on stable walls till she bleeds. No where to take her off grass, we have fields and hardstanding infront of stables but even that has two patches of grass there. Where do I go from here. I'm off work tomorrow so can be around x

Can you line the muzzle to stop it rubbing? Ideally I would leave her out with one on. Is there an arena she could go in with hay? Or would yo let you fence off a strip of field?

We had this problem with my friends pony which she kept at my house. He has a greenguard muzzle on 24/7 when on grass but we also electric fenced off a long thin strip which he grazed down with muzzle until no grass left. It didnt take long to just turn to mud. Now he goes out with others with the muzzle on but any sign of heat he spends a day or two in the pen with only soaked hay. He is fed speedi beet and molasses free hifi just a tiny amount for his supplements. He is on alphabute when his feet are sore and Global Herbs Laminitis Prone as a preventative. Vet said he was borderline laminitic but we've managed to get alot of weight off him with only walk exercise. Good luck.
