I have now looked at my horses upper palate. It is really soft and spongey to the touch and she doesn't like it being touched. It has slightly come down lower than it should be checked other horses to make sure. I noticed her face on her bridge is slightly more puffy than normal and shes not keen on that being touched either. She had the dentist which probably didn't help the puffy face. Looks like I will have to call the vet but any ideas from you guys what this may be? She is bright no nasal discharge and eating well. I obviously haven't put a bit in her mouth to see if it changes after a week or so.

My mare has the same 'swelling' of her palate which comes down slightly lower than her front teeth. She's always had it, it's never caused any trouble (although someone said it would cause her difficulty eating *rolls eyes* ) and I've not heard of it causing problems. A lot of horses don't like human fingers in their mouths and I suspect the issue with your horse is more related to the puffiness on her face.

I rang the vet and he said this does just happen usually in youngsters with teeth cutting or change of feed. She is 11 no change of food so I presume just run down or something. He said the bit is nowhere near that area so fingers crossed its just something that will go away
