I've been told by the vet that my new horse has lampus and its nothing to worry about. Does anyone know more about it? I think its when the gums come down lower than the teeth but any further info would be good. Thank You

Lampas or Lampers is a swelling/inflammation of the roof of the mouth, usually seen in young horses when teeth are erupting I believe. However, I got an older rescued pony about six years ago who had it for a while and it made bitting uncomfortable for him. Old fashioned horse vet told me it was often connected to feeding straights. Have also heard it can be due to poor condition? Don't know how true either of these "facts" are? He told me to rub salt into the roof of his mouth twice a day until the swelling went down. Don't know if this really helped or if swelling would have gone down anyway but pony certainly enjoyed it and it disappeared within a week or so. Not a lot of info around about it when I looked at the time.
