Has anyone done this and did the abscess re occur? Pony has an abscess from his second round of jabs. It took a while to appear and despite hot packing twice a day it is not changing. It's deep, only visible when his neck is bent a certain way and vet has got puss out of it via injection

Vaccination company are paying all bills and although they would usually require a longer period of time to give it a chance to blow through the neck, they have agreed to have it lanced as the pony is soon to be up for sale "officially".

Vet feels that as it is so deep it may well "wall itself off" and could take months for it to come to the surface, particularly as it's not changing at all (pony not in the least bothered by said abscess).

Thoughts?

If vet and insurance are happy with the desission (sp) to lance it I am sure it will be fine. Weather it returns or not is the luck of the draw, when we do them on cows some return a second time most do not.
It does not sound juicey enough for me to offer to do it I love the really ripe ones.

Never lanced an equine one but I had to have one done in Aus many years ago. It healed fine, although there were about 3 days of hot showers and squeezing/stretching the incision several times a day to get all the pus out! Personally I'd prefer not to leave one as it is a "drain" on the immune system.

For the first 2/3 days you keep opening the incision and flush out with weak iodine solution or at least that's what I do with my goats!

We had a horse referred to us with a large abcess under its saddle area on one side. It was under the muscle rather than skin and was huge!! When we lanced it we got half a water bucket out of it. Once we had lanced it he had it flushed out with the hose pipe twice daily. The horse was with us for a couple of weeks but it healed fine without refilling.

Wow.....! Makes my lancing of a calve's abcess in his ear (near the ID Tag) a little trivial...LOL

My pony got an abscess from getting the jab for her ID microchip. It burst out at the crest unfortunately after several rounds of antibiotics and it seeming to heal up it ended up with a fistula between the area and the crest constantly discharging pus and the vet had to cut it out. She has a 4" scar on her neck but it has been fine since.

One at work had this, it did not come up for weeks after the injection, and when it was explored it was HUGE. Like flaxen above it was about half a water bucket full. It was in the chest. The horse was very good about it, but I seem to recollect flushing for 20 minutes twice a day for about a month.

I suppose on the bright side it was not expensive treatment (Pevadine and antibiotics plus elbow grease), and the horse was surprisingly tolerant. It does not show now where the incident was either.
