Has anybody seen the threads concerning the sale of land in Brockham....the residents are fighting for 2.5 acres of land (see www.Brockham.org). Evidently the "local" owner (reported to be a farrier!!!!) is going to sell it to the travellers who will turn it into a mess and a caravan park unless they find the £160,000 the owner wants for it....for 2.5 acres and a barn. Surely that must be against the law or something?

No. It happens all the time round here. I know morally its probably not right, but who can blame the land owner if he can get that for it. Unfortunately its life.

If it is a farrier though I would have thought whatever is made on the land sale will be more than lost through the farrier business, along with any social standing. What goes around comes around!

ouch - that is EXTREMELY close to home... there has been a group rallying about this - I had note posted through my letter box today about this. Brockham is a village with a very high sense of community and has an awful lot going on and a lot to offer - which includes the best firework display in Surrey for fireworks night ( I am allowed to be biased!)
Can you name and shame the farrier? or is that not allowed? The note said that this was on Middle Street which is smack in the middle of the village...so I can blame the owner as this would really have a very negative impact on what is a lovely village. I am so VERY surprised that he feels that the travellers are the only option - property gets snapped up really quickly here even under this climate.

Happens a lot. Not the same exactly but I liv in a very well to do little village in kent.

A large plot of land was bought by an 'incomer' to the village, who was pretty well off and wanted to build a manor type house on the land.

Everyone in the village went into uproar and protested with the council a million and one objections to his proposal. It was nothing to do with anything other than the snotty lot in the village didnt want him building a bigger and grander house than theirs

The council rejected any plans after this so he decided to get his revenge by deviding up the plot (prob about 7 acres) into little pieces and selling it to Irish travellers.

They dont stay very often but I have to say that they are really nice when then do stay - horses, dags and caravans!! I get on fine with them but the locals dont. It is quite hilarious actually.

Let him sell it to travellers then!! I wouldnt be blackmailed like that and he will make himself very unpopular either way.
