Can anyone give me any tips or advice on managing my own fields? Apart from the obvious poo-picking. Been offered 4.2 acres a short walk from home, and I have also got an acre and a half and 2 stables at my new house. So excited as I can't drive due to a medical problem and there's no livery yards near by. So any advice of what to do and what time of year would be great. Can't wait to get my horses home at last! :)

Sounds lovely ...... best thing would be to see if someone can recommend a local farmer/contractor - they can them come and look at the land and let you know if it needs anything - generally you would spray for weeds in spring - reseed in spring or autumn if it needed it - get the hedges cut from August 1st onwards if it needs it and consider fertilising if required.

If you want to set aside 2 acres or so for hay it would be a good idea to spray that ground for weeds and get it fertilised so you get maximum crop - you should have plenty of land to do this - I have just got 140 small bales hay off 2 acres at a cost of around 1.25 a bale - this ground was not fertilised, if it had been i would have gotten more.

Saying all this my 2 were on 2 acres for 5 years and I did almost nothing to it - but it is suffering now !

Have fun and enjoy x
