Bye then! I can't help but feel sad.

Land Rover was in profit, too.

Very shocked to hear this news. How terribly sad - god it was bad enough being sold to Ford, but it seems worse being sold to Tata.

It's a case of Ta-Ta - byee! But let's face it Land Rover hasn't been "Land Rover" for a number of years.

Whilst Defenders still have a reasonable reputation Freelanders and Discoveries have gained the reputation for unreliability and nicknamed "members of the bonnet-up club".

I used to have a 1958 Landrover until recently and now have a Toyota Landcuiser - the mainstay of Australia.

So I don't feel too sad - the real marque went ages ago.

Who knows perhaps things may improve under Tata - they already have their own look alike Defender at half the price.

The new Discovery 3 is superb, as is the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and the new Freelander. It is no surprise the company is in profit, and having access to engines such as the Jaguar diesel has made all the difference. They may not have the reliability of the Japanese, but having owned two Landcruisers I do think the Discovery beats them hands down for comfort.

Should have gone years ago, been crap for last 30 odd years

How predictable that you should reply like this. I cannot comment, not having been a LR owner for that long, but have enjoyed several over the last 10+ years. If they are so crap, why carry on owning one?

I believe Pedantic said previously that he has never owned a 4x4 and prefers to drive Transit vans.

No, I have had a few 4x4's, I have a Terrano at present, my Transit is for work.

Had a 67' 88 Land Rover...what a peice of crap it was..Lucas, "Lord of Darkness" electronics made starting the machine enough of a drama to keep a gambler happy. Had a 53' XK-120...neat car, way too many leaks in the engine and again, "Lucas, Lord of Darkness" electrics.

Ford sold the company for 40% of what they paid several years ago....should be interesting to see where all this goes.

Started off with a '62 2a....bloody brilliant....ever since I reckon Ive been lucky and always had reliable ones.

Discovery 3 has been pretty crap for us. Been in the garage every month due to something going wrong with it. We have had about 5 discoverys as well without probs. Why oh why do the try and make them nowadays with too much fancy tricks. Traded it in for a freelander 2 before the warranty ran out on the disco. I am getting a defender pretty soon as well. We are landrover daft.

Have to say my Disco 3 has been brilliant. So much better than my previous Jeep Grand Cherokee it's ridiculous. Passengers regularly comment on how good it is, especially adults in the 3rd row who can't believe how comfortable they are.

Was a bit annoyed that you can't buy them with anything other than road tyres though. Even with all the electrics they're rubbish in mud. And I use mine in the field to tow harrows etc as well as towing the trailer.
