Hi,

I have been looking into getting a 4x4 for a while now and have just seen a 55 plate Freelander 1.8 petrol adventurer at the local garage with only 46,000on the clock.

I have been researching for reviews about them and they dont appear to be very good (although haven't managed to find a review for the exact model)

So does anyone have one and what do you think?

I only need it as a general runaround but will also tow (one horse or a couple of cows) when I take the towing test!

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks for reading!

hey i have a freelander 1.8 petrol-it is older than this but it has been a whole load of problems, plus yes i am not sure that size engine would tow ok, i think it might need abit more power...i dont tow on mine but the head gasket has gone a few times etc etc. in general the 1.8 petrol engine is not the most reliable, mine is a t reg so is older, im not sure if they have improved since....mind you when it is ok it is great to drive-through mud, rocks etc carries loads in it and is a great 4x4 (what 4x4's are really menat for) lol!!

I would't if I were you. I had a 1.8 petrol freelander. I loved it but it wasn't up to towing; it simply wasn't heavy enough. You have to bear in mind that any vehicle has to be at least the same weight or heavier than what you are towing, therefore you'll need at least one (for trailer) and a half tons (for horse) in front of your trailer. The petrol engined vehicles are (oddly, and I don't know why) a lot lighter. You will also find it very thirsty for general running around. If you could find a diesel one you wouldn't have a problem with one horse. I would have though cows would be rather heavy??!!:)

Depending on the model it seems online that the braked towing limit will be 1800Kg or 2000Kg, either way unless you have very light cows! It won't do the job! You could possibly tow your one horse depending on it's size and weight (bear in mind tack, water, haynets etc to add to the payload) but it could be tight even then, but cows can weigh anything upto 1 tonne each!!! (dairy of course being lighter)

Thanks for all your replies!

If I'm honest the towing isn't too much of an issue but would like to have the option to tow if i wanted!

Reliabilty is the main thing but I think this isn't too good from what I have found out!

Thanks again!

BTW the cows are Herefords so not that heavy lighter than my horse infact!! :D

My friend had one and it nearly bankrupted her. I had a ZR (same engine) and you would not believe the problems I had with the engine. You could be lucky with it, but you probably wouldn't be! I wouldn't touch one again with somebody else's bargepole.

WHAT horse do you have????!!!!! (taken from the Hereford cattle society): Average cow weight: 770 kgs-967 kgs!! mature Bull 998 kgs-1,230 kgs

Sorry you just shocked me when you said herefords and then said lighter than your horse!!!

I have a 1999 Landy Freelander 1 (petrol) and whilst for me it has been reliable I wouldn't use it for towing - whilst the figures add up and you would 'legally' be able to tow a small lightweight trailer and a 'small' pony/horse personally I wouldn't unless where you are going to go is absolutely 100% flat and guaranteed hard surface - tbh get a larger engined vehicle - at least a 2.5ltr - go for a diesel if you can get one. I know that there are people who would tow with one and consider it safe to do so but honestly I definitely wouldn't.

i had a freelander for a while and won't get another one again, it was dreadful. always breaking down, couldn't really make it up the hill when it was full so dread to think how it would have towed!

In short - don't do it!!!! I have one, admittedly mine is only a 2001, but it is the worst thing i have ever bought! I have only had it for 18 months and its basically a money pit... latest quote to get it repaired is over 2K!! Has nearly given me a nervous breakdown over Xmas - needless to say it's going and I am replacing it with something renowned for being a little more reliable! lol
