Dad is looking to upgrade from his Jeep Grand Cherokee sometime fairly soon (not really urgent) as it's showing it's age a bit. Original plan was to get a smaller, non 4x4 for 'everyday' and then only use the Jeep for towing and 'country' stuff (

) but he decided yesterday he just wants a new 4x4 for everything (after the Jeep proved its usefulness by going through the extremely flooded ford with no problems, saving us 4 miles on the journey home

. Currently leaning towards the Land Rover Freelander. Doesn't like the design of the newest Disco, and Range Rover too expensive.

Similarly doesn't like new Jeep Grand Cherokee.
He really wants a Defender too, but admits this is impractical

So, opinions/experiences of Freelander, or alternatives? Would be interested to hear opinions in comparison to Jeep G C especially if anyone has had both.

We had a 55 plate Freelander, 2.2 desiel engine - Only after we bought it were we told it wasnt good for towing and we also had problems with it driving on (dry) fields in summer when we went to shows. Was a total disappiontment on the side of things. Although on the pluss side it was okay on fuel. I dont know if a bigger engine size would make it better to tow with or not, it may do, but we were told that Freelanders in general arnt very good to tow with.

Cant think of much to recomend, wev now got a Hyundi Santa Fe which we like.

I have to say I love the look of the new Freelander, smart car.
BUT I wouldn't be buying a freelander for towing, really not big or gutsy enough.
Light trailer with a pony perhaps, but anything bigger then buy a proper 4x4

From what I have read and heard, the Freelander doesn't have the towing capacity for a trailer and 2 horses (I think it's just about okay with 1 horse). But I don't know about the new Freelander.

Definitely check the weights of the Freelander and what it can legally tow.

I am a Defender lover all the way!

I have a Freelander2 and it has been brilliant over the last couple of weeks in snow and ice, not skidded once and we have had a lot of snow in Herts. It is quite heavy on diesel (don't ask me for mpg!) and the heater is noisy and annoying and boot space could be bigger but apart from that I'm really pleased with it - much better than the original Freelander

ETS: You can tow a 505 with one horse (16.2) with the Freelander2 quite safely, I have done so and it is perfectly fine.

I have a 2000 td5 disco and it has been absoloutley fantastic in this snow and taking uo in and out the very very muddy field with no problems at all.

this is my road up to horses(today) really bad but in disco no problem my partner couldnt get up it in his car.

My OH is a LandRover tech, he says old freelanders are rubbish but says the new freelander2 is a much better car and can tow a decent weight. Denfender are great and dont brake!
I have a terrano2 and thats really good also heard good stuff about sorento, know a couple with the ford ranger wihich they love and they tow with no probs.

Ditto, I have a 2001 td5 and its fantastic, heated leather seats, automatic (which is great on the ice) tows fantastically, and all the usual little extras .

Have friends that live up the mountain and our road is pretty bad, The disco has been fantastic this winter, Father in law is buying one after driving ours last week

Its also permanent 4WD . Very comfortable for motorway driving and will happily sit at 70mph , Also has a sports mode button for overtaking

I love my freelander to death , i have towed my large trailer and 1 horse but only when ive had no alternative. Personally i believe its not man enough for the job. But on the other hand my friend has the Jeep and you dont even notice the trailor and 2 horses. (but it is very unreliable mechanically)
Like anything you get good ones and bad ones, just the luck of the draw.

Mum was going to get a freelander, but then decided it wasn't best to tow with so got a nissan xtrail instead.she loves it and you don't even know it's towing. You can also swap it between two wheel drive and four wheel drive which is also a bonus

Freelander 2 can tow one horse plus trailer, original freelander can't tow anything worthwhile.

Personally I like the look of the FL2 but it does limit you, or might it be a good thing only be able to tow one?!

I wouldn't tow a horse trailer with a freelander, can't you get another cherokee? The smaller one.

Nah, Dad doesn't really like that either (he is fussy

Well, if Freelander can only tow 1800/one horse and trailer, that pretty much rules it out for us as we have a IW 511 and normally tow 2 horses. Sorry, should have done my research

pricklyflower- no sorry should have expanded, Dad wants a Defender as well as another 4x4- now that is impractical costwise
grin.gif
we haven't really thought about having a Defender properly- not really sure why- will look into it.

I want a Disco (so no point preaching to the converted
cool.gif
) but Dad doesn't like the look of it, he prefers slightly more 'streamlined' in his words, like the Jeep GC. Disco is a bit too right-angley towards the rear for his liking. (sorry, can you tell i am bad at technical descriptions?

)
James_Earwaker- he doesn't really want a pick up- shame coz i think it'd be cool

Will carry on researching, and look into Sorentos etc.
Thanks all
