I was browsing ebay and I found this landrover for sale:

I know it is coming up for MOT soon so we could be hit with a huge repair bill but it seems a fair price; we were thinking we could haggle it down a bit more as the mileage is very high.

We don't know much about transport; and weve not 100% decided what we want to get (box/trailer) but when we looked into this car- insurance £113/tax£200 which my mum doesn't think is terrible.

We don't wanna spend a lot on a towing car as we are both going to keep our normal cars for commuting so this one will be used once or twice a month (more in summer).

What do people think? Any other suggestions would be appreciated :)
 
Not particularly cheap for its year and mileage - it's about its money - they make 700-800 usually with fewer miles.

a LOT of miles - be aware it may not pass it's mot next time (and can cost a lot to get through it again)

if it looks sound (and the rust isn't too bad) then make them an offer!

If you're near, wouldn't hurt to get a knowledgeable friend to check it over either :)
 
be very careful. looks like there will be lots of rust on it!
also I had an N reg auto disco and got shut of it before it needed a new gear box at a cost of approx £2500. It started to loose power when towing so ended up trading it in for a nearly new defender.
id be looking somewhere else, sorry if its not what you want to hear.
 
Yeah I do think it's a lot of miles but I was hoping we could haggle it down a bit.

We're aware it could cost a lot to repair but were hoping if it's not too much. I notcied the rust; guess we'd have to see it to tell! :)

I've seen people with older ones...we're not going to rush into it but at that price I guess we think it's worth a look.

No thats fine :) I guess it's worth a look as it's only 15 mins from my mum's. Would it be better to look around the £1000 mark for something a bit younger/less milage. I know we won't get much for that but it's a 2nd car only for towing.
 
worth a look if its really close. Do you have a friend thats a mechanic that could go with you and have a look at it?
i really couldnt tell you how much to spend on one as you need a reliable one thats safe. i bought a nearly new one (57plate so cost a fair bit) as i needed something that wasnt going to have to go back to the garage every month or so when i was having probs with it - the disco ended up going in nearly every week over the summer as something kept going wrong. The new one has now been pretty much resigned to yard work and towing as its so expensive to use it to go to work and back everyday
 
Yeah we deffos cant afford to do that! Lol. Considered selling one of our cars but we both do quite a bit of milage/day so not really practical.

Landrovers are great if you have a mecanic in the family or a diy bod they can be ok but older one usaly need constant atention strangly you might be better with a high mileage one as its most likley had most things replaced!!!!, my take on Landrovers is they are for people who want a 4x4 rather than people who need one, Look round the world in the most hostile inviromets like mining, aid agencys,in the outback,desert and war zones you will find toyotas and nissans mostly !!! as breaking down in a desert is a little more seirious than on the school run........

Ohhh well I was just scared about towing weights and the like! I felt safe with landrover discovery as I knew there was no chance of us being over with an ifor!

Could I ask which nissan and toyotas can tow? Or where I can find the max weights?

nissan terrano, patrol ... toyota, landcruiser or the 4x4 pickups then mitusbishi
shogun/pajero, isuzu trooper/bighorn... will all tow a double horse trailer

bit of a sweeping statement dont you think? i certainly never bought mine to do the school run! and i HAD to buy a LR as its one of the few cars I could buy that had the towing capacity i needed to tow my horse trailer 3.5t fully loaded Equitrek)
i think youll find that there are plenty of land rovers in the army etc that are used desert and wars etc?
also very interesting that I was told that if my land rover defender got stolen (in actual the first one i bought did after 2 yrs) it would end up in Iraq or Dubai as they find them very useful over there.

not realy a sweeping statement its a fact!! watch the news, nature, travel films etc if you dont belive me.. yes they are in the army but its more to do with having to buy euro made( ie spare parts if there was a war having to come from the other side of the world) and cost than anything else ....
 
oh dear .... I do the school run in mine and funnily enough its for towing too ;)

Sometimes the older ones are nearly the better ones ... like folk have said ... if you have a mechanically minded person to have a look with you .... well sure there is no harm in looking at it .... But personally I do think you can get perhaps a 97 disco for around that money if not a little more .... Our old 300 tdi which was a 97 was bought for £700 . :) It served us well ... we now have a td5 which does a great job but also looks the part ;) .

If you are buying an older vehicle,the single most important thing is how well it has been maintained. I would say its even more important than the make. The reason that Nissans and toyotas are so popular in Australia etc ,is purely finnancial.Why buy a vehicle from the other side of the world when they make them cheaper next door.In fact the Nissan Terrano /ford Maverick,is a bit of a lemon.Give it a good look over , with a mechanic friend.This could be a bargain. There is not much of a market for ageing gas guzzlers.

the reason nissans and toyotas are popular in Austrialia is because they will stand the harsh conditions !!! when I worked over in new zealand and visited oz there were very few landrovers and even fewer outside the citys, I was very keen on off roading and dirt bikes at the time and met up with the Auckland 4x4 club who were very dissapointed that I wasnt a LR fan as they like taking the micky out of them, the company i worked for had some customers with land rovers guess who was made to fix them !!!! yes mike ditto with the maintainance and what its done, lots of short runs, towing or ofroad is worse than 10s of thousands on the motorway and yes the terano and maverick arent the best sadly like most of the nissans we get that are made in spain!! the new shape navaras are having a lot of warrenty claims ...

sorry, but wouldn't touch it with a barge pole!! being a discovery, old, a diesel, need to take special look at underneath- could cost a fortune to keep on the road, especially as the mot is nearly up.mind you, it could be a bargain, but beware!!

What on earth have you got against Diesels,cheaper to run, go on for ever,Any vehicle can cost a fortune to keep on the road, but at this price,we are talking about disposable motoring. I would want a new MOT on it however,but this should be no problem for the dealer to arrange.(though an MOT is no guarantee of reliability). Just get a friendly mechanic to have a look,and remember.. Its still worth over £200 for scrap at the end of its life.
 
Hey, keep you wig on! i have nothing against diesels, we have a landy here and a diesel car- i was only giving an opinion for gods sake, diesels are fine as long as they have been looked after throughout its life- i do know a bit about vehicles so i'm not a numptie!
