Hi all,

Just wanted to know if anyone had a recent experience of a laparoscopic double ovariectomy perfomed on their mare, and could tell me how much it cost them, why it was deemed necessary and whether the bill was picked up by their insurance company.

Many thanks.

Ginnie

I had this done on my mare about 3 years ago, it was all picked up by the insurance after a lot of investigation and justification. For the procedure and also a years worth of investigation etc the bill was just below the £5000 max. When I enquired with the RVC about having it done privately the cost was £2500 ish.

Reason we had it done was because my mare was almost always in season and suffering badly with colic symptoms, inability to move freely, off her feed and "dangerous" behaviour" in that she would squash you against the wall rammed into her flank with no notice.

I seem to remember that we were back in full work about 4 to 6 weeks after the op.

Thank you Angua2. We have a mare just like yours. She has been managed very well on Regumate, but in view of the cost & the fact she is only 11, the ovariectomy seemed a more cost effective option - not to mention not having to pump hormones down her for the rest of her life...

Until, that is, the vet quoted £4,500 to do it....

WOW..... Mine was carried out as a teaching case at the RVC, and my mare was only 5!
