large animal charity puts down dog whose owner donated £100,000 for its care.

For those who do not know about bloat in dogs

Bloat in dogs is not the same as being bloated.

In humans being bloated is likened to feeling full/uncomfortable etc.

Bloat in dogs is an often fatal and very painful condition, particularly common in deep chested breeds like retreivers, labs etc.

'IF' the dog had bloat then I doubt there was any alternative to PTS

Surely the timescale would have been something like this:-

- Lady found dead with loyal dog next to her
- Dog checked by vet and decided that quality of life not good so PTS
- Week later will read and animal rescue told of both bequest to them and that the dead dog had been "given" to them!

Can not see that the animal shelter has done anything wrong

I agree with this, I had a dog that developed bloat as he aged, he would be fine, happy and healthy during the day, but on a night was in agony. The vet pts without hesitation for me, even though he appeared to be his normal boisterous self when she saw him.

Can I also add - that I am surprised that not more people are upset that the elderly lady died 5 days before her "caring" neighbours or family bothered to check on her

So the alternative is.........keep a suffering dog going because his owner made a big bequest? I think not. Actually an organisation like that would have been able to take a more objective view and act in the dogs best interests, rather than muddling it up with the kind of emotions an owner would have to deal with.
And yes, poor owner, whose only company was the dog. I hope they are now together.

Yes I'm more surprised that nobody rang her up in five days from the family. Can the dog suffer from bloat if it hadn't eaten in 5 days? I think it must have been bloated from water retention with no water for 5 days either.

Agree ellenjay. I'd be far more concerned if a vet would happily prolong a life for money than pts because the dog is not in good shape.

5 days with no food, water or medication, watching its owner and no other company.

I think the people saying this woman would be upset are probably right... They're probably also realising that the vet who pts isn't who she'd be upset at...
