Large Bald Patch on horses back

Hi,

I have a piebald cob, he is 23 years old. A couple of winters ago he grew a really thick coat, as much as I groomed him he wouldn't calm down it kept falling out all winter. He got to the point where he rubbed his bum that much on his hay rack that he developed a large bald patch on the top of his bum.

This has been like it now for a couple of years. He has had no lice, wormed on a regular routine and groomed thoroughly. I do believe horses coats get thicker as they get older, and now that its too late, I've been having him clipped fullly out for the past two years to prevent any of this happening again.

What I'm upset about, is that the hair has not grown back, and it looks quite unsightly, people look at it when I'm out hacking him and we are having to cover it up with white chalk so it doesn't look so obvious.

I've tried a trial bottle of MTG Original, but no luck. It has wispy little hairs but they never grow any thicker over the area. It's a large area so I have to make sure that he has sun tan lotion on in the summer or it can go scabby.

Wish I'd never had a hay rack up in his stable now, then this wouldn't have happened!

Can anyone give me any advice? I don't know if there is something else I could possibly do? Or is it too late as the scratching has killed the hair by the roots?

Many thanks in advance.
