Large bale hay for the field

I've got a big square bale of hay coming today (about 25small bales worth) to be plonked in my field because it's costing me a fortune in small bale hay now the field has been trashed...and this way saves haying the field daily, and as it's so large and tightly baled (I'll keep the strings on) it should last them longer than putting out easy to eat small bale hay.

Last year we had standard round bales which lasted 4 horses 2 weeks, this should last my 2 about a month I hope! Preferably a smidge longer.

Am I going to get problems with it being rained on? Neither of mine are fussy feeders and will both eat anything, but obviously I don't want to get half way through it and find the rain has rotted it - is that likey? Is there anything I can do to help it??

Can you get hold of one of those large crates that farmers use to store cabbages and things like that?

You could then put the hay into that, it will be off the ground and stops the rain getting to most of it.

I think we have a couple of those crates but having seen this bale of hay, I think it would be quite a bit too long for that....good Idea though, wonder if I could put boards down (don't want to do pallets) and boards on top.

A tarp would scare the crap out of Snip!

I think putting in pallets in the field helps too as it keeps it off the wet ground, as long as your horse can't step on to the pallet and hurt themselves.

... just seen your post above... thats a no go then... :-)

You dont have to put it all in it.

Can you not get the hay dropped off somewhere dry and then take one of those big crates and put a few sections of hay in it, at a time?

The main reason for doing the big bale thing is because I have a broken knee and I'm trying to reduce chores as I'm relying on others
