Hello,
I have a draught horse who has a strange shaped head, and an ISH with a very large head. :D
But I have problems finding online tack shops which cater for larger sized heads!!
Can anyone recommend any?
Thanks in advance!

Are you on about a specific item, like a bridle or a headcaller?
Think it really depends on the make of what you are wanting to buy.
Some bridle companies you can buy a bridle in parts, so you can have extra long cheek peices or extra wide noseband etc without having to go wider/longer on other parts of the bridle, Rideaway offer this service on certain makes of bridles, although you will have to pay more, otherwise just look for WB size rather than Full.

Thanks, well headcollar and bridle for my ISH-haven't been able to find many XF/WB sizes at all!
(Have got to have a bridle especially made for my draught horse-have tried all different parts of bridles in different sizes and still don't fit!) Trust me to have wonky horses :D:o

You can get tack made to measure which is lovely and sometimes cheaper than the more prestigious branded stuff. I've had a couple of made to measure bridles made up for my mare - she has a mostly full size head but she takes an xfull browband and a full size noseband is a bit snug, so MTM was the way to go. If you want more info feel free to PM me :)

My Ardennes X has a big head. The sizes I look for are Draft, WB or XFull.

Measure the browband area of your hoorses as I find this is the sticking point in alot of XFull and WB bridles.

Full is 16 inches, XFull should be 21 inches at least. I often find the browband to be the biggest fitting issue.

I buy leather bridles from sellers on eBay and endurance style bridles from Performance Equestrian.

Most of the big horsey shops sell XFull headcollars.

There are Amish sellers on eBay (in the US) who sell draft bridles - they had a medieval style ones a while ago!

I use XF bridles on Cairo and now Farra, but they are not huge Clydesdales - just under 17 hands. Farra is currently sporting a very nice Flyde XF for the show ring and has a Gallop XF for everyday use. I can find cheap XF leather head collars on ebay for the field and use the Warmblood size Cashel fly mask - their draft size is too big - more suited to the very large heavies.

If you are really stuck then try http://www.waldburgshires.co.uk - they do stuff for the very large heavies.

Alternatively try Mat Marlow of Heritage Saddlery - he is on ebay as he does XF and also made to measure tack which is very good quality and reasonably priced.

The only custom made tack I have had to buy was Cairo's western bridle and bit - and this had to come from the US - not that many folks ride western on the big ones, though it is starting to be more popular.

Gough Bridles have made stuff for me, didn't realise they had a website or I'd have posted the link before!

Lovely stuff, prompt delivery, I'd definitely recommend them. Kel rectified a measuring error I made on a kineton noseband for the cost of a postage stamp & sent me some complimentary spare rivets for gag cheeks that fell apart that I'd not even bought off him ;) He's a good lad! :)
