Hi lovely people.

I have never bought one of the 8ft square (well, rectangular really) bales before, how do they compare to the 5ft round ones? As in, do you get more for your money?
Thanks

I've had a couple. In my opinion, you get less. It didn't seem to last as long anyway.

Same here but I’m not sure if it’s because the squares are compacted more so it’s easier to feed more (I don’t weigh). I was using 1 1/2 long bales a week but am now only using 1 round. Rounds are also £10 cheaper for me.

Surely it depends on your supplier and how tightly the hay is bailed. You can calculate the volume of the bale using basic maths but that won't always tell you the comparative weight which would then dictate how long the bale lasts.

Thanks, that’s interesting because good old google says the square are usually denser, I’ll stick to round then \ (•◡•) /
Thanks

I dropped on last year and bought some big square bales from a farmer who had a couple spare and they were immense - so heavy and lasted us ages. When we ran out I bought a couple more from a local supplies and they were a lot lighter so I guess depends on your source. I'm now buying rounds direct from another farm, partly as know I've got a reliable and consistent supply, and partly as I can put 2 in my trailer to collect then roll them out at home
