Lari has been off his antibiotics since Monday just gone following his kick. This was the second visit by the vet who xrayed and scanned. The scan revealed a picket if bus which they removed and filled with antibiotic. They hibi scrubbed the wound well, gave him finadyne in his neck and strong antibiotics orally everyday for a week. He is now gone down from two to one bute a day.

When we visited Sunday I fancied the tissue over his scar where he was kicked was slightly warm...we visited yesterday and the area is still raised and warm but he's walking sound on it and still happy for it to be touched.

I'm not sure if it's warm due to the fact it's bare skin as its been clipped or whether it's infection. I've not had a clipped horse since 2006 so can't remember how it would feel daft as it sounds.

I am thinking I may have to get the vet out again if it's no better next week. But really don't know where to go from here. Any suggestions.

Partner having knee op (total replacement) next Thursday so feel I have enough on my plate at the moment but also keen to gets vets out the way by then if possible.

Y.o and me playing it by ear for now.

We're at the hospital for partners pre op appointment. They are raising concerns about his ECG and saying he might not be able to have his op at that hospital, their waiting clarification from the hospital that treated him. So we will not get over to see Lari today.

I'll take some photos of his leg when we visit tomorrow and I'll get the y.o take on his leg when I see her tomorrow too.

I will give the vet a ring in the meantime and see what she advises.

OK I've put a call in to the vet and she is ringing me back, she's on call at the weekend as it so happens.

Just spoke to y.o by text as she's on the school run and she will look at it when she gets back.

Update: vet has just rang me after speaking to y.o. who rang her after my text.

Vet says Y.o says horse appears comfortable and asked if I agreed which i do as he was walking fine yesterday and apparently today, eating up, shooing horses away, grooming friend, etc Vet reluctant to go down route of more antibiotic and bute as last twice have not resolved.

Says she can re scan, and/or dig around for potential foreign body but at this stage given his current state which is comfortable and he wound is clean she suggests blood test to look for SAA trace which is an infection marker.
.
She will come out Monday/Tuesday and take bloods and make a decision then. She said it might just be inflammation that causes heat/swelling.

We will get some better photos tomz.

Update photos: From 30 mins ago.

So back on one bute a day.
Walking fine. Lump is hard and no pain on pressing, didn't feel as warm today either. Will see what the vet thinks Monday.

Maybe the bute has helped with inflammation but it wouldn't help with infection.

Y.O not there to ask to clip other leg and I have no clippers.

Fell over in the mud so desperate to get home and shower or it will be me with an infection 😬

First photo from behind.

How long after the kick was the x ray done, B? One of my horses had a knock and it took 2 weeks for the sequestrum (bone chip) to show on x ray.

Sorry just seen your comments.

The bloods were taken this morning and I've had a phone call back with the result.

His SAA level is 4 and anything under 20 is considered to be clear of infection. So that's great news and a relief!

Thanks everyone 😁

Good news , at least you can relax a bit now
I know. I was seriously getting worried where this was going to take us if there was still infection present. Delighted.

All the staff at the yard love him as he's so cuddly. And if he does absentmindedly grab your coat sleeve gently with his teeth and you tell him "NO!" he sticks his tongue out in retaliation. He still does it even now, how funny. He such a goofball. ❤️
