My horse is having sarcoids removed from his sheath area tomorrow by laser surgery and I wondered if anyone else has had this done to their horse and has any recouperation advice? Vet had said it would be about 3 weeks recovery but just wondered about bedding and turn out etc in that time, and also the actual healing of the surgery?

Any advice would be appreciated

There is a horse on our yard that has had a few sarcoids removed with a laser. When first done they look very neat then go through different stages during healing. Some healed better than others but all of them did heal and the horse never seemed bothered by them even though some of them looked awful at times! I'm sure your vet will give you after care instructions/creams etc.
You have to really look now to see where they were - and they haven't come back :-)
Good luck today.

Mine has had 19 removed last October by laser. Several were on his sheath and groin. All looked horrific afterwards, and other than one that was stubborn to heal on his sheath, all are looking great now. The big sheath laser wound was just that...big. It reduced size and scabbed over a period, but one day I knocked it with a brush and found that it was still raw beneath. Photos were sent by my vet to Prof Knottenbelt who suggested some cream which has sorted the problem. He is due to revisit Prof Knottenbelt next week for a follow up (Prof K did the surgery on him).

Follow up care I was told not to touch them. If they did get dirty with soil or bedding, then just to hose them with cold water, but in fact I never did touch them until the episode with the one that didn't heal.

Out of all the treatment my youngster has had over the past 4 years, lasering seems to have been the most successful.

Hope it has gone well for you today.

Mine had two removed last October. Horrific wounds which we just cleaned around to stop any weeping burning the surrounding skin. We had to put Vaseline round the wounds. They took over 3 months to heal and the one in her 'armpit' opened up three times whenever she had a hooley but I never box rested her as she's not great at being stabled. She was in quiet work from about 6 weeks after surgery and on bute for about two weeks. She's been left with small scars one of which is still a small bald patch. Mine is grey so the scars fade in quite well.

Ah thank you. Great advice and exactly what my vet has said. Today is day 3 post op and yes, miss a huge wound but already seems to be changing shape and size.

Just like any wound keep an eye on it, interfere as little as possible, try not to let the area stretch and break down - though being on the sheath this is less likely to happen and make sure you have fly spray/cream/gel to put around the area when the flies start if it isnt healed by then.

We had a horse on the yard lasered. She had a golf ball sized sarcoid on her elbow. It healed beautifully - you would never know there was anything ever there, not a hair out of place. She has never had another sarcoid appear anywhere since.

My new mare has sarcoids and another 5 grew after she moved here.

treated by the vet - no azer was involved by the vet and us with creme etc, tonight :D:D I get a call from vet to say Liverpool are happy with them and to monitor them. This comes with 4 other check ups where they were not happy and we had to repeat treatment.
